Oh this was good. Simple yet effective. A thought provoking novel set in a fairy tale setting with a satisfying conclusion.

Much better this time around.
Caution: It is still extremely slow.
The plot was more intriguing, the horror aspect (the tunnels!) a lot scarier, and although I did find Thomas a bit exhausting at first, he and Audrey-Rose really were more fun to read about. A nice romance with a satisfying conclusion and new beginning.
I’m actually kind of excited to read the next sequel which I think might have to do with Liza.Much better this time around.

This was such a sloppy book. I swear nothing happened 99% and then the murder mystery was magically solved. The main characters were still looking at clues as a, "good place to start," during the second last chapter. And the attempt to add conflict to the main couple's relationship was pretty pathetic. Their personalities, which have been established in the previous two books, were thrown out the window in favor of a faceless man? You can't hype scandal yet have your characters act like prudes. It makes for a frustrating read and shows no real growth in the characters. And the biggest problem is not how these characters were but how they will be in the next book. Overall, a complete waste of missed opportunities and poor execution. This was such a sloppy book. I swear nothing happened 99% and then the murder mystery was magically solved. I’m a terrible human being because all I can hope after that ending is that Henry doesn’t begrudge Mary for his change in fortune (though there is hope he will be accepted by his father eventually)

That was surprisingly very good. Even though I had a month’s break while reading it I still had no trouble getting into the story. It’s a book that gets better as you progress. What starts out as a secret mission to steal a person quickly became a struggle for power of multiple factions and kingdoms. The characters are surprisingly emotive and affectionate which was similar yet different from other YAs. The writing is fabulous with easy-to-understand descriptions and immersive world building. Even though it took me a damn long time to finish the book (not that it was long), the straight-forwardness of the plot with the interesting characters involved makes each murder mystery of this series a wonderful read.

Of course I love the book. It’s incredibly amazing how Sherry Thomas can write such a complex and entertaining murder mystery. I love her characters the best, there’s so much un-layering that needs to get done with every move they make. I do find her mysteries confusing though; the threads being so disparate that I usually forget at the end how and why they were individually and collectively important. I might have maybe make highlights or bookmarks to keep track of them for the next book.Of course I love the book. This is definitely the best and twistiest of the series so far. Lots of character development, we get to see our characters in foreign situations with some high, high stakes. And finally! some clear, definite answers and revelations. Great setting with smooth transitions among the characters and effective plot connections and discoveries as Sherry Thomas jumps effortlessly between past and present. But best I like is that the characters know their personalities and their priorities well and will stand by them even if it means they have to let go of their personal desires. They regret sometimes where life has led them due to their choices (or lack thereof) but are still hopeful and I think there’s something beautiful to take away from that. This is definitely the best and twistiest of the series so far. Not bad. The murder mystery was satisfactory if a bit lean and bittersweet. I think there might be too many things happening at once. Good development regarding Kiera’s past and Lord Gage. Thankfully, the series isn’t over yet. I hope Kiera and Gage fight again, I love to see them argue and makeup. Not bad. The murder mystery was satisfactory if a bit lean and bittersweet. I think the book started out pretty nicely, but it meandered aimlessly halfway through with a weird romance thrown in (that boy is trouble) and a half-cooked murder mystery.
Also, it does much more to convince the reader of the oppression of the patriarchal society in the olden days with a few, well-placed, impactful comments than to saturate the book without conviction.I think the book started out pretty nicely, but it meandered aimlessly halfway through with a weird romance thrown in (that boy is trouble) and a half-cooked murder mystery.

Wow, that was actually quite wicked.
Even though you don’t start connecting the dots until halfway through the book and onwards, it’s fascinating to read. It’s lyrical and exudes a silent evil in the form of domestic abuse, games where you end up bargaining more than you thought, and promises that may bite you later. I think you really enjoy it best when you don’t try to box it.

A pleasant enough read, if nothing extraordinary. Verity’s repeated insistence of her pleasure being near other men questions the sincerity of her love for her husband. Best one yet of the series. I’m really enjoying the adventures Sophronia and her friends go on in each book, but really enjoyed their true personalities shine in this book. Loved how the gang were able to spend so much time together. Some might say that the Sophronia’s choice of patronage may be contextually forced, but I think it’s a good choice for a variety of spoilery reasons.Best one yet of the series. Effortlessly easy and quirky to read, the fast-paced story with its bouts of actions, twists, and discoveries makes it easier to forget the somewhat one-dimensional villains and side characters.

This was actually really good. I thought it was going to be a companion novella of sorts, but it’s a full-length novel. I’m actually glad that I didn’t read this before Magic Triumphs because half of the story for both of these books is essentially the same. Also, there’s a few unanswered questions and convenient characteristics that were swept under the rug which I’m hoping can get proper attention in the next book. One thing I’ll say is that the situation never felt dire and/or desperate, which is never the case in the Kate Daniels series. This was actually really good. That was a lot of fun (especially the latter half)!
I saw reviewers complain about the age bracket of the characters and how it negatively impacted the book. I actually think it made the story more realistic (relatively speaking) particularly with respect to learning new things and such. It’d be odd for 16-18 y/o to be as inexperienced in life as Sephronia and co. were.
Mandatory shout out to the narrator for a bang-up job. Gonna be checking out tie next book soon. That was a lot of fun (especially the latter half)!
