Amazing book!!!! I was wondering how you continued the story from certain points in the book and then Carl Deuker continues it and keeps you captivated the whole time. It was an amazing book!

The proposition from the Fat Man was so simple. To get paid, Chance just has to go for his daily after school run, pick up a package along the way, and ask no questions. Chance is a smart, observant seventeen year old, so of course he knows that smuggling suspicious packages on the Seattle waterfront is wrong. But Chance is in a tough spot. He lives on a cramped sailboat with his dad, an alcoholic, chronically unemployed veteran. Someone needs to make some money to pay the bills and buy the groceries, so Chance takes the job. Things go smoothly at first, but Chance quickly realizes that he is more involved than intended with some very dangerous people. Runner is a fast moving, tautly written thriller, but it may also provide additional value to readers who have personal experience with substance abusers. Chance has a uniquely mature perspective on his father’s addiction. The book opens with Chance explaining that he doesn’t hate his father, that it would “….be like hating a wounded animal for being wounded.” Though he never excuses his father for his afflictions and weaknesses, he tries to look past them. This book also gives thoughtful consideration to issues of class and privilege, without ever feeling heavy handed.

MY FAVORITE BOOK OF ALL TIME. This is an amazing story, thrilling. It is real life and deals with difficult times. I highly recommend it, it is simply great, I am out of words to describe this captivating read. Runner is AMAZING!!

Runner was a good fast paced book that really kept you guessing until the end. I actually didn't really like the ending of the book, I thought it left you hanging, and you didn't really get the feeling that the character was affected by what had happened. As good as it was, Runner isn't my favorite book, but I would recommend it if you like fast stories with a lot of suspense. I'll give Runner a 6/10. EDIT: Thinking about the book a bit more made me realize how much I really hated the ending. I didn't feel everything was resolved and the main character didn't show any feeling about what had happened. I think Runner is a 5/10, not the best ending.
