The Hunger Games is a battle in which 2 tributes (male and female) from each district are chosen to fight in a desolate arena with only a few survival items and their wits to help them. The remaining live tribute is crowned victor of the Hunger Games once the rest have all been killed. Katniss Everdeen, a 16 year old girl from District 12, has her worst nightmare come true when her younger sister, Prim, is chosen to compete in the fight. As a desperate act to save her sister, Katniss volunteer's in place of 12 year old Prim. Now Katniss is thrown into a whirlwind of choices: information or secrets, friends or foes, life or love. Let the seventy-fourth annual Hunger Games begin!
Far ahead in the future lies the nation of Panem. Divided into 12 ( possibly 13) districts, it is ruled by the ever powerful , majestic Capitol. Long back, the districts had rebelled against the Capitol, and as a result, the Capitol holds the annual Hunger Games - a reality show where 2 kids from each district are picked from a draw to fight in an arena... To death. The sole remaining tribute gets to live. This book tells us the story of Katniss, a 16 yr. old girl who goes into the hunger games to save her sister. Katniss and the boy tribute from district 12, Peeta must together beat the odds for a chance to survive these horrific games. For in these games, there are no second chances. You win... or you die.

The Hunger Games is definitely an incredible story! Katniss Everdeen is thrown into the games against Peeta Mellark and other tributes. Never in her life has she felt so confused weighing the meanings of life: survival or love. This book teached us that love is powerful, like Katniss, it made her do crazy things. It's a must-read!
Dystopia meets reality TV.
This book portrayed human depravity in regards to the suffering of other people and powerful entities, i.e. the gov't, that take advantage of others.
A little bit of everything. Katniss is forced to a forest arena to find to the death -with one victor- against 23 others ages 12-18. Her home life, in poverty, her preparation for the televised "games", and on - and off - screen romance with two (Peeta and Gale). The country's problems continue with her involvement; rebellion control in the following two books in the series written to expose the unfathomable events actually exist in our present day.
Katniss Everdeen volunteers to fight to the death in an annual battle of survival run by the government. If you survive and win the games, you win lifelong riches, but if you lose, you die.
From a dark life, comes a shining survivor and heroin. Each year 1 boy and 1 girl between the ages of 12 and 18 get drawn to see if they go to the Hunger Games. It is a fight to the death until 1 victor is left standing. Who will survive?
Notices
Add a NoticeViolence: This book was very violent in the part where the hunger games actually take place, and in some other parts.
Frightening or Intense Scenes: Battle to the death, lots of death.
Violence: Battle to the death: Smashing heads with rocks, stabbing, really graphic killing.
Violence: It is a battle to the death, so there obviously is fighting. And there are two points in the story that involve deadly mutant animals. Ick.
Violence: A lot of death and blood, but still a good book.
Violence: It's basically a violent love story. Lots of death and killing.
Violence: Well. How shall i name the ways? 1) Dead people 2) Stabbing people 3) Mutant bees stinging your face and you die 4) Blood 5) Mutant mutts that once were the other tributes 6) Explosives (don't get me wrong, explosives are fun) 7) A girl with a bow 8) Fighting 9) Adults making children fight to the death because of their lack of mercy and forgiveness
Other: Nothing but violence, eg. no sexual content or coarse laungage. They do kiss a bit but kissing isn't really sexual content and Katniss is naked at one point but there is no description of her body.
Violence: lots of dead people
Violence: Many varieties of gruesome death.

"It's your district token, right?" I nod and he fastens it on my shirt. "It barely cleared the review board. Some thought the pin could be used as a weapon, giving you an unfair advantage. But eventually, they let it through," says Cinna. I'd have used it as such.

Pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy. If she's ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love. THE HUNGER GAMES is directed by Gary Ross, with a screenplay by Gary Ross and Suzanne Collins and Billy Ray, and produced by Nina Jacobson's Color Force in tandem with producer Jon Kilik. Suzanne Collins' best-selling novel, the first in a trilogy published by Scholastic that has over 16 million copies in print in the United States alone, has developed a massive global following. good book my mom even like it, and we own it. not my favroite but a good book.
Engaging and suspenseful, with a unique narrator, Katniss, a brave young woman. Set in the future when the government maintains control over different districts by involving children in a competition to the death called the Hunger Games.
How is the book? Is it too violent, I heard it was pretty violent. Also, can someone tell me what is the first book called? Thanks!
My favorite series. I love them, thrilling read. I've read the series twice and still find the read amazing. Highly recommended, and I've read ALOT of books! :)
How is it? I need to know if it is too violent.
dumb boring non violent book waste of time go with battle royale instead
A fast-paced, well-written, thrilling read. If you are able to put this book down at any point in the story, I commend you. I read it all in one long sitting...practically devoured it. What a fantastic book.
To DirectionerForever: I understand how you enjoy this series. And I get how you're offended by other haters of HG. You say to respect the writer, but I say, the writer should be respectful to the people who were the "original" HG creators. And I'm talking about Battle Royale, a Japanese novel adapted into a film in 2000. It is about a government controlling the country and forcefully sending young high schoolers to fight to the death in the wilderness. Sound familiar? I'm not a HG hater. I simple wish the author would give credit to the original creators of her plot. There's too many similarities for HG to not in the very least be influenced by BR.
