Quotations
- “"R-y-e," Rye spelled. "Rhymes with lie.” Mrs. O’Chanter frowned and gave her a harsh look. “Sorry,” Rye said. “Rhymes with die.” That didn’t improve Mrs. O’Chanter’s mood.”

This graphic novel combines a universal story, a fantastical twist and absolutely gorgeous illustrations to create a wonderful masterpiece. Originally written in French, Jane, the Fox & Me tells the story of Hélène, who feels like an outcast and loses herself in Jane Eyre. Contrast between monotones and full-colour spreads is managed adeptly and so is the usage of space and layout. The one-eyed fox's symbolism wraps up the story neatly with a heartfelt stamp upon the end. This graphic novel combines a universal story, a fantastical twist and absolutely gorgeous illustrations to create a wonderful masterpiece. Not exactly a fresh sci-fi story, These Broken Stars is a standard futuristic trek across unknown lands to discover a secret hidden by the government-like powerhouse father of the female protagonist. Both characters, who get alternating chapters from their points-of-view, are believably developed, but there is nothing remarkable to this book that makes it stand out.Not exactly a fresh sci-fi story, These Broken Stars is a standard futuristic trek across unknown lands to discover a secret hidden by the government-like powerhouse father of the female protagonist. An ambitious concept that technically does not fail, but the story is unsatisfying in its straightforwardness and the reliance on magical realism as a deus ex machina. An attempt to connect themes such as loyalty, family and trust almost succeeds by the novel's end.An ambitious concept that technically does not fail, but the story is unsatisfying in its straightforwardness and the reliance on magical realism as a deus ex machina. The concept to Wake Up Missing is a bit far-fetched, but our four main characters are all well-developed and avoid feeling like one person with four mouthpieces. The action keeps pace quite well, considering the book's middle feels a bit longer than it needs to be, and the (relative) lack of twists helps the plot gallop toward its resolution. What's lacking is a true emotional connection to any of the characters, who don't really get enough down-times to showcase parts of their personality that aren't busy surviving or making plans. The concept to Wake Up Missing is a bit far-fetched, but our four main characters are all well-developed and avoid feeling like one person with four mouthpieces. Don't let the seemingly simple two tones of this picture book fool you -- Kazuno Kohara is absolutely brilliant at conveying atmosphere and tone through simple lines and expressions on her whimsical characters' faces. Each interaction between the librarian, her three owl assistants and patrons of the library is a delight, and the end brings the story full-circle in a wodnerfully satisfying way.Don't let the seemingly simple two tones of this picture book fool you -- Kazuno Kohara is absolutely brilliant at conveying atmosphere and tone through simple lines and expressions on her whimsical characters' faces. I had heard great things about this book before going in, but nothing prepared me for the emotional rollercoaster that was Far From You. With a bisexual protagonist trying to solve the murder of her best friend who never got around to being her girlfriend, this is both a sharp-edged mystery and a moving love story that transcends genre boundaries. The balance of mystery-solving and reflective introspection was managed extremely well; Sophie's emotions and thoughts seem so real and relatable that I teared up multiple times (in public!) and had to take breaks to get my feelings back under control. This is a book about survivors and victims, and what it means to wait for someone to love you. It might not be a good fit for everyone, but as a bisexual woman myself I related to Sophie intensely.I had heard great things about this book before going in, but nothing prepared me for the emotional rollercoaster that was Far From You. A paranormal novel that doesn't balance out the regular life drama and the paranormal life-or-death dealings, this book feels on the wrong side of ambitious, and the ratio of males to females doesn't do it any favours.

A wonderful sequel to the first, here we get Mendanbar's frank and open perspective as he and Cimorene meet a variety of diverse, entertaining new characters along a suitably twisty plot.
