The first of Craig Johnson's long-running Longmire mysteries (currently in its 5th season as a very good Netflix series) is an absolute delight, a beautifully written novel laced with sharp humor about a small town caucasian Wyoming…

Loved the TV series, but book too slow/didn't finish.

2-4-22 Life is to short to force myself to finish a boring book. 8-29-23 Today I finished reading this book, giving it a second chance. It is definitely a slow starter but I am glad now that I stuck with it to the end.

I first fell in love with the series on Netflix, and it has been fun to meet the Actors/Actresses at the annual "Longmire Days" held in the summer in Buffalo (aka Durant), Wyoming! Am finally making headway through the series and,…

There's a crime and the sheriff finds the perpetrator, but while classified as mysteries these books are not brain-puzzle whodunits but calmly-paced slice-of-life stories about interesting characters in a colorful rural setting. I became…

Steve-the-Pirate (see comment below) does a much better job of saying this: Craig Johnson is a tremendous writer; he creates complex characters without the use of many adjectives. This first novel in the series does an excellent job of…

Craig Johnson's "The Cold Dish", delivers an immersive murder mystery experience that delivers on giving well polished scene setting details, excellent character development, and superb twists. This is one of the most down to every detail…

Best novel ever! Love the Longmire stories.

The first in the Longmire series, this book is evocative in its description of sparsely settled Durant, Wyoming and it’s environs and in the way it includes Native American lore. The main characters, Sheriff Walter Longmire and Henry…

A western series, but so much more. Walt Longmire is a Wyoming sheriff who drinks Ranier, refuses to get a cell phone, and fully conversant in weapons and ammunition, but who also is fond of quoting various classics of European literature…

Didn't watch any of the TV series but heard about it and decided to read the books. This first one was quite good so looking forward to the rest.

First in a series, features veteran Sheriff Walt Longmire as he balances justice between Wyoming's white population and Native American community.

Long-simmering resentments between white and native American residents of a small Wyoming town explode with the discovery a dead body.

Not at all like Hillermans' Indian Policemen, Longmire is a completely different cup of tea, personally screwed up but apparently the worlds greatest shot-700 yards freehand-oh well the writing and character will develop and you will learn…

I've been meaning to give this series a read and the first book has me hooked - am going to keep reading them. I also checked out the first episode of the tv series adaptation and it's good, too, but different as adaptations often are. I…

Having seen the first four seasons of the Longmire TV series, I decided to read the first Longmire book in the series. Ahem, the TV series is better, which surprised me. The author, Craig Johnson, produced dialog that is never attributed,…

I really enjoyed watching the TV show, so I picked up this first book in the Longmire series. I must say I honestly enjoyed the book too! Especially the banter between Longmire and Standing Bear. They work so well together.

The first in the series, whose main character is Walt Longmire, a sherif in Montana. The books are a fabulous combination of western and mystery with a little humor thrown in. All the characters have a real-life quality and keep to…

Don't give up on this mystery book series vs. the TV show! Oddly, the first book is not the best in the series. He is a steadfast hero, and there is a point in this first story where he really shows his mettle.

I really wanted to like this book. I did my best but halfway through I gave up. Longmire's incessant smart-alec banter had little to do with the investigation. Early in the book there was a jump from one chapter to the next that made no…

First in the Walt Longmire series. A long ago rape by 4 teenagers resurfaces as they seem to be targeted for murder. I enjoy this series because of the witty and sarcastic dialogue that seems easy and unforced. The characters become more…

I love all the Longmire books and was a fan of them before the TV show. I especially love the audio versions. I wrote a fan email to Craig Johnson and he graciously replied. I highly reccommend the entire series.
