Lots of twists and turns and plausible suspects. A very satisfying read. Looking forward to the next in this series!

The chief protagonist in Ann Cleeves' book is Inspector Vera Stanhope. She is a middle- aged, frumpy, grumpy and very intelligent woman. Sort of a female version of Inspector Frost (as he is in the books, not the television series) - but…

Intrigueing. I love the. Era and Shetland series so I will like Ann cleeves writing. Louise penny is one of my favorite writers. Her character development is tremendous. I feel I know everyone in Three Pines.

Inspector Vera Stanhope represents many things which are not correspondent to societal norms and gender expectations. First, Vera is a female authority figure in a powerful position, assigned considerable responsibility, extending to a…

I always enjoy Ann Cleeves' series - Vera Stanhope and Jimmy Perez - in books and on DVD's. This was not my favorite of the mysteries, but it was still a "good read". Highly recommend both series. Kristi & Abby Tabby

I adore Vera! I am glad that I found my way to this series now, as opposed to 20 yrs ago. I don't think I would have appreciated it nearly as much. Ann Cleeves has a gift for weaving a mystery that is compelling without being overly…

As a fan of British mystery the novel was a perfect nighttime’s read with The usual twists and turns one expects Without being long winded. Ann Cleeves paints the perfect picture Of English life (that is, from my entirely American…

Silent Voices. by Ann Cleeves. After having enjoyed the TV adaption of some of her other novels this is one I haven't seen on the small screen. The TV Vera is gentler, less gritty than her her alter-ego in the novel. But I…

Cleeves keeps the reader guessing who did the murders until she reveals all. She knows how to pace all of the information too. Just when I got tired of following the clues and learning about the background of all of the characters, she…

PTJ Vera will tell you she's not gunning for Nicest Cop Award. She's blunt, frequently to the point of rudeness. But to her credit, is dogged & tenacious in hunting her prey. Vera is not out to make friends, but to solve murders; and…

I had not read any of Annn Cleaves books before. This one I enjoyed, it kept me guessing 'til near the end who dun'it & why. Vera Stanhope is quite a character & she sure loves to eat !

I enjoyed this and the detective is a quirky character. I see there are DVDs of the tv series Vera based on these novels which should be interesting. I do prefer her stories set in Scotland though.

A really good mystery novel. I love Ann Cleeves as an author, particularily her recent 4 books set in the Shetland Islands. This one is a Vera Stanhope book. But you don't really need to have read any of the other books with her as the…
