This is one of the best books I have read recently. Through this novel Ivey portrays the world as alive and mysterious even when her characters are unable to accept many of the mysteries they see making me wonder what kind of mystery and…

Intriguing characters and the 19th century Alaskan frontier drive this story about adventure and survival. The epistolary format works perfectly in this novel and the two narrative voices feel remarkably real.

Another wonderfully written story by Eowyn Ivey. The Snow Child is one of my favorites and now this one is as well. Perfect mix of history and magical realism.

Perhaps Eowyn Ivey, having been named after a J. R. R. Tolkien character, feels she has much to live up to. Certainly, she is a writer who doesn’t do things by halves or take shortcuts; not satisfied with writing a conventional novel…

Based on some real people and events, this is the story of Colonel Allen Forrester and his journey into unmapped Alaska after the U.S. purchase of the territory. It's also the story of his wife, Sophie, who does some trailblazing of her…

At this point, I would follow Eowyn Ivey anywhere. Her books are incredibly creative and the writing is carefully considered. In To the Bright Edge of the World, there is a wonderful juxtaposition between the "new" and the "old" - a…

This is a really great book! It does bounce around between time frames though so if you don't like those, it's one of them. If you are fine with the time frame jumps, and the "Out in the bush" type stories are your thing then you should…

This beautifully written historical fiction is based on journeys undertaken in the late nineteenth century through uncharted areas of Alaska. The story (set in 1885) consists primarily of journal/diary entries, old photographs, letters,…

At page 100 you are intrigued. At page 200 you are fascinated. At page 300 you are completed captured. At page 400 you are . . . speechless. In your memory you will "read" this book for years.

A profound and important novel that will likely change how you view history and nature. The author has woven a masterpiece that mashes fiction and fact and leads one to the inescapable conclusion that much of what we see is ultimately…

I was so THERE in this novel, partly because of my many hours backpacking in the northwest, so I could easily visualize the environment, weather, etc. Got to love the main characters, each with their individual weaknesses well constructed…

This wonderful, heartfelt book covers, in one way, just the year of 1885, when Allen leads a small Army expedition to Alaska's Wolverine River (stand-in for the Copper River in an actual expedition that took place that year) while his…

"She always keeps a part of herself a mystery." This quote about Alaska in one of the letters in the book sums it up. That is what allows good books about this state to be epic in proportion. The sky is the limit! The way Ivey combined…

There was just enough wonder and variety to prevent this book from being too saccharine. It isn't the sort of historical writing that normally captivates me, but I give the author credit for introducing the correspondence between two…

An engaging historical novel based loosely on the 1885 expedition of Lt. Henry T. Allen to ascend the Copper River into Interior Alaska and westward, 1,500 miles into the wilderness. I gained renewed admiration for New World explorers,…

One of the best books of 2016. The balance between historical fiction and mysticism is entrancing. Highly recommended for book clubs.

Ivey's choice of the epistolary novel as her vehicle to tell this story was a wise one, connecting the two stories (his and hers) as their letters go back and forth. I spent a too-brief period in this part of Alaska many years ago -- her…

Eowyn Ivey has written a novel that can be put into the same league as Edward Rutherfurd's New York: a Novel, and Ken Follett's Century trilogy. Multiple settings and characters are connected in both seen, and unseen, ways. People reveal…

It's been a while since I read a book that is journal entries, letters, newspaper clippings, etc. all making up a story, and I really liked it. There's a lot of beauty in this book. It's not just about an expedition, but about friendship,…
