This book is very good, but to start with a content note: It is very heavy into sexual violence. Sexual violence is pretty much the motivating force in this book, and the main character is marked by one of their gods to experience pain as…

This is one of those reads that is best read and digested slowly. It is long (600+) pages, with lots of details and a large cast of characters. There is a wealth of background things going on in the first half of the book and not much…

A little bit front-loaded with world-building, and definitely not for every reader due to the explicit and sometimes violent sex scenes, Kushiel's Dart nevertheless remains a favourite with its potent mix of sex and politics, and cast of…

This remains one of my favourite books in Carey's Kushiel series. Phedre is an engaging heroine, and her role as an anguisette adds a definite spice to the books. Carey deftly manages to keep Phedre's sexual proclivities from being a mere…

This is an ugly cover, but a fabulous book. If you're in GoT withdrawals, definitely give this a shot. It's hard to get into, heaven knows it took me a full reread before falling in love, but it's definitely worth it.

I thorougly enjoyed the complexity that this author has shewn through her characters and environment. It keeps you on your feet throughout the story as you follow Phèdre's journey. Never a dull moment.

Fantastic and complex world building. This makes for a difficult world to dive into, the mythos and belief system of not just one but many cultures. The story is delicately threaded through the first half, then fast and action packed in…

Ooh this was torture to get to the good part - but after 250 or 300 pages it finally got better. I enjoyed the 2nd part of the book but I cannot say that I actually connected to the main character - she seemed "too different". I may read…

Not an easy book to read, I must admit. It took quite a while to remember the names, places and all the relationships. But man, once she is held in captive in Skaldia (which is about halfway through the book), the story really picks up…

I enjoyed this book. The beginning of the book was a little slow which often happens when a novel seeks to create a land and culture foreign to the reader. But it became quite an enjoyable read and I found the world interesting. The story…

This book could have benefitted from some serious editing, especially in the first half. (It takes several hundred pages before the story even really starts.) All in all though, it was an enjoyable read. The world is interesting, the…

Finding that this book topped the 100 list of the Decade's SF/F at Tor.com, I decided to read it. After reading half the book, I could not understand why it was at the top of the chart! Was the stereotype true - that most SF/F readers…

This is an excellent book. The rest of the series is awesome too. I've reccomended it to several people in the past, and they've all become addicted to it as well. Part of the allure is the strong female characters, the vivid…

Well written but just not enough fire.

The story takes WAY too long to really get going, but once it does it is hard to put down. After page 450 or so.... Which is about how long it takes to get used to the flowery language.
