The first book in the D. I. Tom Tyler series

Oct 06, 2015

I enjoyed reading "Season of Darkness". The setting of rural Shropshire in England during early WWII really glowed. I found myself liking and caring about Inspector Tom Tyler, and all the various characters. Jennings is very skillful with her cast of people in the midst of stressful new realities of their world. I got involved and stayed involved.

A bit tedious & not too thrilling. Benign mystery I only liked for the landscape it is set, Shropshire the lovely.

While the murder mystery is the vehicle for the plot, what makes this book, and the others in the series, is how it brings to life rural England during WWII. With interest in this era spiking due to 'The Imitation Game' and 'The Bletchley Circle', this series will satisfy readers who want more.

Good solid writing and intriguing plot.

Much detail about psychological and interpersonal lives of charactors, to detriment of plot development. Nice detail on era: I had no idea there were adolescent girls recruited from London to do farm work during WWII. Visit this author again, yes, as long as I have a few sure bets along with it.

A murdered Land Girl in the aftermath of Dunkirk, and the heart of darkness in an English village - looking forward to this one!
