One of the best novels I've read in years! Highly recommended.

This tells the story of a blind chemist in Sofia, Bulgaria who reimagines his life. It is a little unusual, not bad, not great.

With the story of one man, the author has managed to tell the story of an entire century. Centered around the country of Bulgaria, this novel follows Ulrich through his entire life; love, loss, and lament. The first half of the book tells just the "facts" of Ulrich's past. The second half draws the reader into the mind of Ulrich as we follow his daydreams. A wonderful book.
