This book garnered a bit of a reputation as a fairly "literary" mystery novel, but it is very much of the crime novel genre. The characters--especially the main character--experience no real arc or change in circumstance or understanding. In fact, the book seems determined from keeping any of its characters from developing at all. It's a finely structured plot, paced as it should be. A decent summer read, but nothing illuminating.
