This reflection on World War I is not your standard history; it's about mourning and memory, about how the Great War has been represented. It will appeal to readers interested in looking beyond the facts to the meaning and consequences of war in general.

Dyer writes about the myth and history making already in place during WWI and investigates the legacy of memory and how the war is remembered even by his generation. He ultimately provides a compelling discussion of the relationship between history and memory and ask you to consider the fluidity of those terms. It is a book that definitely moves your heart and mind.

A wonderful, elegiac meditation on the ways art tried to come to terms with the tragedy of the First World War...and also the ways art shaped the image of the war while it was happening. Haunting.
