The movie is fine, I would have rated higher if it was in fact based on historic facts. It is NOT. The most important scenes are fictional and never happened to Goethe. At least you would expect a legend "(VERY) loosely based on historic facts"... but nothing. This killed the movie for me. Not to mention the people chanting Goethe's name at the end as if they were in a soccer game.

I loved the movie but not the message it has sent to teens. Nobody is worth killing yourself over! NOBODY.

This is an historical drama and romantic comedy about Germany's most famous writer, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) at age 23. The film is in German, with English subtitles. Apparently the American distributors changed the original title (GOETHE!) to "Young Goethe in Love" to capture the "Shakespeare in Love" audience. The actor who plays the lead is German actor Alexander Fehling, whom you may recognize from the Showtime series HOMELAND. (He also played Master Sgt. Wilhelm in the film "Inglourious Basterds".) The film is a fictionalized story of Goethe's early years and the events that formed the basis of his novel "The Sorrows of Young Werther", which made Goethe famous by age 25. His introspective poetry inspired works by Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn and Wagner, among others. Goethe's magnum opus was the tragedy "Faust", about the scholar who sold his soul to Mephistopheles. Goethe was also a statesman whose essays influenced Hegel, Schopenhauer, Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Freud, and Jung. He also wrote scientific treatises on botany, the theory of light, and meteorology. Germany's worldwide nonprofit cultural organization, the Goethe-Institut, is named after him.
If you like this film, you will probably also enjoy "Beloved Sisters" ("Die geliebten Schwestern"), another German romantic comedy about Goethe's friend and fellow writer, Friedrich (von) Schiller (1759-1805).

Really great. wonderful story

good story, wish it included a hint of who Goethe became after this traumatic youth. Now I have to read more about this poet.

The sweet story of a 'first love' done by an excellent cast, with convincing period costumes and settings. Miriam Stein is radiant as Lotte, and Alexander Frühling is just right as the smitten Goethe. Wistful, tender and comic by turns, it's a romantic film that will leave you smiling.
