The appeal of John & Sherry Petersik is their bright and cheery "You can do it!" attitude, and how they chart their journey from know-nothing paint-happy first time homeowners armed with paintbrushes and enthusiasm to ‘been there, made that’ DIY devotees. Their now-archival blog houses most of their projects and lots more of their zingy writing (Sherry especially). I’ve also read their second book, Lovable Livable Home, but YHL in my opinion is more appealing and engaging because they talk about problems they encountered in their homes and how they handled them as opposed to presenting design tips that anyone could give or look up. YHL is more creative and down to earth, but most importantly all of the projects and ideas are do-able, and the authors are very relatable.

Young House Love by Sherry & John Petersik. Divided into sections (Chill: Living Ideas, Nosh: Kitchen and Dining Ideas, Doze: Bedroom Ideas, Rinse: Bathroom Ideas, Stowe: Organizing Ideas, Hang: Artsy Ideas, Tweak: Accessorizing Ideas, Cheers: Entertaining Ideas, Splat: Painting ideas). Like a lot of books it talks about re-doing thrift store finds but I also liked that it has some ways to spruce up IKEA finds. Some of the projects require you to own your own place, but a lot of them don’t. I thought that it had a lot of nice decorating and organizing ideas, and that their projects had less potential to come across as tacky than some other books (no duct tape on the walls!)

As with many blog-turned-book deals, I was curious to see what kinds of projects would be included in the Young House Love book that we haven't already seen on the fabulous blog. Turns out it has lots of cute ideas about how to build your own headboards, paint your own picture frames, hack IKEA furniture, and turn virtually anything into artwork.

Ultimately, though, I think the best stuff still lives on their blog, because the Petersiks' real talent lies in applying their magic to an entire room from start to finish. Instead, the book feels more like a random assortment of crafty projects that one could just as easily discover by spending an afternoon on Pinterest. Fun to flip through, but nowhere near as exciting or aspirational as the Young House Love blog.
