The framework for the film may be similar to "Rashomon" but this is a more lyrical mystery story with the flavour of the everyday at its core. My recollection of Kurosawa's film was that it was more dramatic, more of a crime film than this one. Bertolucci was only 21 when he directed and co-wrote the screenplay for the film - an impressive debut, indeed. I'm not sure which one I prefer; I think I'll have to watch "Rashomon" again to make a more informed decision. Both are certainly worthy of praise, and should be seen at least once.

This early film by a young Bernardo Bertolucci was shot in black and white, and in many ways resembled 'Rashomon' by Akira Kurosawa. A murder happened and several suspects were interviewed by the police, each telling how they spent the night when the killing took place. Interesting to watch, but one has to realize this is an art house piece. Subtitles.
