Twenty young women from across India arrive for an intense, month-long beauty boot camp to prepare for the Miss India pageant. Winning means stardom and freedom from the patriarchal society. In another corner of India we visit a camp for young girls run by the militant fundamentalist movement to make them good Hindu women. Moving between both camps and the characters' private lives, this is a provocative portrait of the world's largest democracy at a critical transitional moment.

Supremely intelligent! This documentary deserves a wide audience for its brilliant demolition of so many of the received truths on everything from the wisdom of beauty contestants to Ghandian non-violence in post-colonial India. 5 stars.

A very interesting look at some of the huge cultural changes happening in India, especially pertaining to women and their roles.

Very unnerving and unsettling at times. Touches on many subject matters. Makes you think of so many more ?'s. Huge changes in major countries and our own doesn't even know about it. Feminist movements, fundamental religious uprisings, hard-core social norms... Yes, I really liked this doc. I recommend this to every one.

An interesting documentary that dissects the 2 extreme institutions of the Indian society - the grwoing militancy of the Hindi movement and the quest for fame and ambition in the eyes of the Indian female. The film's constant juxtaposition of these two dichotomies presents a riveting story of the collision of values. One destroys the fabric of the social cohesion as it aims for the destruction of minority rights; the other presents the growing thirst for globalization as it wants to embrace the need for worldwide acceptance to feed its own personal agenda. In one way, they share a common goal of achieving their ambitions in the most aggressive possible way that losing tantamounts to failure.
