Opinion

From Library Staff

This tale of hardworking people being overwhelmed by cold, unfeeling modernity will make you chuckle bitterly to yourself even as your kid asks you what the heck “diesel” even means.

Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel is a good companion book to The Little House, also written by Virginia Lee Burton. Both books have a central theme of finding your way, and where you fit in life as the world grows and changes all around you. A very observant child will find Mike's steam shovel building a road in The Little House. Children can also find drawings of the house in the book, Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel. These books are well written and children will want to hear them over and over again.
