[the Quest to Discover the Deepest Place on Earth]

The deepest cave on earth was a prize that had remained unclaimed for centuries, long after every other ultimate discovery had been made: both poles by 1912, Everest in 1958, the Challenger Deep in 1961. In 1969 we even walked on the moon. And yet as late as 2000, the earth's deepest cave--the supercave--remained undiscovered. This is the story of the men and women who risked everything to find it, earning their place in history beside the likes of Peary, Amundsen, Hillary, and Armstrong...

March 8 2016....this was so interesting to listen to. While I have known about crazy?, brave?, explorers and mountain climbers....I wasn't really aware that people that explored in caves went to quite the extent that this book revealed. THEY ARE NUTS! I cannot imagine being in a dark, cold, tomb of a place for weeks on end, eating powdered food, crawling on my belly, squeezing through rock falls, trying to get as deep into the earth as I can. Was great to read (listen!) about it though. I liked the part where they are sleeping on a shelf, about the size of a door, suspended above an abyss (was that for a week or more?) and the one fellow fell off, while trying to relieve himself, was hanging from one arm, knew he had to get back up.....nuts! Another part was when the one fellow used the wrong bottle in the middle of the night, and his granola bars were a little soggy when he went to have his snack the next day. Oh, and then there was their celebratory feast of black beans, that resulted in cramps, vomiting and overflowing latrines, (in the dark). NICE!......Not for me!!!!!
