This book was a huge disappointment. There is too much just doesn't ring true and makes the book feel soap-opera-ish. Maddie's multiple attempts to increase the funds she got in her divorce settlement by gambling really take away from the mystery as do the series of disastrous events when she and her work partner try to attend a conference in Florida, and the ending of the book is an unpleasant, unrealistic surprise. I really enjoyed the second book in the series, the well developed mysteries, and the forensic information presented in a clear way, but the "extras" in this book really book away from the mystery.

This is the fourth book in the Mattie Winston mystery series. I liked the other three books pretty well; I liked this one much less. Mattie seems to be all over the place. Some of her insights about cause of death are perceptive, but her personal life is a mess. And it gets worse as the book goes on. She's going to need a major intervention in the next book, at the least. Not sure if I'm going to take a chance on it.
