I saw this in the movie theater when it first came out, and when I was looking for a movie to help out a friend who was directing a children's show, this is the one we watched. Having just read the book again, I watched it. The script is solid and of course, Angela Lansbury gives it such charm and grace. It is a bit sexist by today's standards, too.

The thing is, except for the names of the children and Lansbury's characters, none of this plot is in the book. The children aren't orphans, and it's not set during the war. Dr. Browne isn't a character and instead, in the second half of the book, Miss Price meets an 18th Century philosopher and witch, with whom she falls in love.

I wouldn't mind seeing this remade, perhaps as a mini-series, using the original stories, although this movie is, indeed magical!

Disney enlivens a rather dull script with some well choreographed cartoon sequences (an underwater dance between Lansbury and co-star David Tomlinson amidst swirling bubbles and fishy waiters is nicely done), the songs are catchy though hardly memorable, and the final showdown between Nazis and ghostly battalions from England’s past borders on creepy. Thankfully, the usual dose of Disney treacle is kept to a minimum, it’s just too bad they didn’t maximize the editing...a raucous jungle soccer game goes on way too long while a song & dance homage to the hawkers of Portobello Road begins to resemble a series of outtakes from Mary Poppins. Fine fare for the single-digit crowd and a bit of syrupy nostalgia for their parents (or grandparents).

i'm glad that you got that movie i havan't watch that movie in a while since you had the last dvd and i'm gonna watch that movie next i'm so glod that you got it i almost thought that you won't get it but good you did get it . it was a really good movie December 3 2013 .

A classic Disney movie set during World War 2. "When young Charlie, Carrie and Paul move to a small village during World War II, they discover their host, Miss Price is an apprentice witch. Although her early attempts at magic create hilarious results, she successfully casts a traveling spell on an ordinary bedknob and they fly to the fantastic, animated Isle of Naboombu to find a powerful spell that will save England." Starring Angela Lansbury, David Tomlinson, Roddy McDowall, Sam Jaffe, and John Ericson.

Not as well known as Mary Poppins, but an entertaining, funny, and creative show. The usual high standard of Disney actors, costumes, set decoration, etc. even some fun soccer animation. Always fun, enjoy!

A classic! My kids watched this recently and enjoyed it even though a lot of the war related story went right over their heads.

One of my favorite live action children's films. Great songs, acting, and special effects! This film still holds up all these years later!
