Animal lovers will be charmed by Pat Leedy's introduction to the alphabet with the able assistance of her happy-go-lucky Husky mix, Shemsu. Shemsu means friend or companion in ancient Egyptian. Clearly, he is both. He cheerfully gamboles through the book introducing each letter with his antics and Pat's wit. If you look closely at the letters featured you might notice that they are composed of fur. A Husky's ability to shed or "blow his coat" is legendary. It's only right that letters of the alphabet in a book he inspired be as furry as the perp, er, pup, in question. Even readers who aren't pet owners will enjoy this novel approach to learning the alphabet. It's a great way to introduce children not only to the building blocks of language, but also to the joys of forming a lasting relationship with an animal who has only love and joy to give.
