Opinion

From Library Staff

Don't let the fact that this is a script for a play throw you off, you won't even notice it after the first few pages. I loved entering Harry Potter's world again, and this story is full of old and new characters and lots of new adventures for both (ages 9 and up). - Lesley

This book was fairly good, but I did not like it as much as the original seven. One of the reasons for this is the characters. These characters do not grow on you like Harry, Ron, Hermione and countless others do. They expect characters like Lily to be lovable, but really, you only see her in a few scenes. The book itself is a confusing, hard-to-read playscript, which makes you fell like, " Hey, this is a playscript, why not wait for the actual play." Overall, my rating would be a lot lower if it were not for the actual story part of the 'book'.

I don't really like this book from all the seven because I don't like that it's more like of a script than a book it's feels like to me that I have only pieces of paper in my hand than more like a cover an pages I think this book can be better.

Wow. This book is a bit different then the other Harry Potter books, but it is just what I needed. I read this just after finishing the series, and I was amazed. It opened up new theories to ponder on. I hope they make it a movie!

Prior to reading this I had heard practically nothing but bad reviews. Plot holes, characters that don't hold true to their past, and a format that is challenging to follow along to. While I have to agree with many of the criticisms, it didn't stop me from devouring this book.

We got to go back to Hogwarts. We saw our beloved characters again, and some new ones. We got some 'what if' scenarios that were sometimes extremely amusing. If you can manage to throw away judgement and ignore the many plot holes, you can squeeze just a little more love out of the Harry Potter world with this book.

The cursed child is nothing like the real Harry Potter. The cursed child is rather boring

I'm sure that as a staged production Cursed Child is amazing, with all the magic and effects it's sure to dazzle which is the reason my rating is as high as it is. But as a story it does not work so well. Rowling's characters are mishandled and the macguffin of the plot is ridiculous.

There are some concepts that seem genius on paper, but in execution, are sloppy and underdeveloped. That's how I felt about most of this play. For one, the plot is... iffy at best. Absurd logical leaps, convoluted time shenanigans, and very distracting plot holes. It feels like fanfiction rather than a new HP installment. Add that to some awkwardly out-of-character moments from several longtime characters, and it just wasn't a fun read for a long-time Harry Potter fan, personally. Let's just say I don't consider The Cursed Child part of Harry Potter canon.

I have to say, this is a pretty well written story of it's own. But I feel like it's way to different from the original Harry Potter series which I absolutely love! Harry Potter in this book has become cranky and mean to his son even though in the series he is nice though adventure seeking... Also the fact that everyone has changed and the whole wizarding world is gloomy isn't what I was looking for... I defiantly recommend reading the Harry Potter series(!!!) But this is a book I could defiantly go a lifetime without reading!

This book doesn't seem like an actual Harry Potter book. Considering the experiences all the characters went through, they acted very differently than they should. (Example: Harry had an abusive childhood, so he would never abuse his children verbally like he did in this book.) The plot is not very well thought through, and the humor is very cheap. It basically seems like fanfiction that was slapped into the form of a script, then published. All in all, this is not a really great book.

GINNY: After I came out of hospital - everyone ignored me, shut me out - other than, that is, the boy who had everything - who came across the Gryffindor common room and challenged me to a game of Exploding Snap. People think they know all there is to know about you, but the best bits of you are - have always been - heroic in really quiet ways. My point is - after this is over, just remember if you could that sometimes people - but particularly children - just want someone to play Exploding Snap with.

HARRY: You think that's what we're missing - Exploding Snap?

GINNY: No. But the love I felt from you that day - I'm not sure Albus feels that.

HARRY: I'd do anything for him.

GINNY: Harry, you'd do anything for anybody. You were pretty happy to sacrifice yourself for the world. He needs to feel specific love. It'll make him stronger, and you stronger too.
