A 2018-2019 Missouri Mark Twain Readers Award preliminary nominee (grades 4-6).

A bittersweet realistic fiction novel about the deep friendship that blossoms between Ben, a former foster kid, and Halley, the librarian's daughter who has cancer, and the dog Flip that followed Ben home.

This was really hard to get into for me. I think I read the first chapter 3 times, and I listened to it once. But once I got into it I really enjoyed it, and it had a good message about love and loss and friendship.

This was a sweet and touching read. For awhile there I thought the author had too many ideas happening but they all came together beautifully.

This is a sweet story of friendship and growing up that is both moving and very funny. Although at times it felt a bit deliberately calculated to hit the maximum number of emotional notes -- a kid with cancer! a stray dog! a kid formerly in foster care! death of a parent! -- in a way that I found vaguely manipulative, and I could have done without the story-within-a-story element of the novel the two kids were writing together, this was still well-written and heartwarming and well worth a read.

When Friendship Follows Me Home is a novel combining loyalty, trust, and friendship. Ben meets Halley, a young girl battling cancer, and they are both going through rough times. Together they train a dog, write a book, and perform magic. But when something unexpected and terrible happens, it’s up to Ben to finish Halley’s work.

When Friendship Followed Me Home is a beautiful novel. This is a story of an unbelievable friendship between a girl, boy, and dog. It is pretty sad, but the story is so wonderful that it drowns out the sadness. Loyalty, friendship, and making a difference in the world come together in When Friendship Followed Me Home.

Kids will be unable to put down this story of Ben, and the challenges he faces in his 12th year. Don't underestimate the love between a boy and his dog.

I was expecting something totally different and the dialog in chapter 1, though it rang true, didn't hold my interest in the characters. I decided not to spend any more time on it.

Oh god. Are you okay with death? Cuz there's alot of it here. I didn't care for the "stream of conscience" style of writing. It felt like you couldn't catch your breath. Which considering the main guy has asthma, I guess fits. The dog is instantly adopted and that is literally the only happy thing in book. Read if you want to be gloomy and sad.

In terms of reading level, this book is quick and easy. In terms of subject matter....heavy. Ben has to learn how to deal with the deaths of those close to him and learn that it is still worthwhile to form those bonds.

I have a dread when reading books with dogs as one of the major characters. I'm always worried that the dog will die. However, I can assure you with this one, Flip is still happily doing tricks at the end of the story.

That doesn't mean this book is death-free, however! Ben lived in foster care for most of his life. He's used to people leaving and things not being stable. Ben was going to try to avoid making connections here too, since a move out of state was planned. However, a death throws everything back into chaos. Flip, a kind librarian and her daughter, Halley, help Ben find a new place to land.

Very moving and lovely book!
