In 1953 Soviet Russia, secret police agent Leo Demidov loses status, power, and home when he refuses to denounce his own wife, Raisa, as a traitor. Exiled from Moscow to a grim provincial outpost, Leo and Raisa join forces with General Mikhail Nesterov to track down a serial killer who preys on young boys. Their quest for justice threatens a system-wide cover-up by Leo's psychopathic rival Vasili, who insists there is no crime in paradise.

Very well done.Dark and somber. Really conveys the hopelessness paranoia and dysfunctional life brought about by the state. The ending gives a small ray of light in the gloom.

The horrible nature of the crimes is at no time used for salacious cheap effect .
Recommend this movie.

Hadn't heard of this one.

Glad I found it--and then realized that the Scandinavian director (Daniel Espinoza) was director on one of the best Sci-fi movies in some years: Life.

Bad news first; this movie was a box-office bomb. $50 million to make; just $13 million in the revenue column. That might scarcely pay for director, writer and actors (Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace.) Howcum? Critics carped about pacing and bad accents. Ho-hum. Something ELSE got in the way of success, here. Wasn't the slightly up-beat ending.

Good news: if you're looking for an atmospheric, cold-war period piece full of dread, fear, guts and gore--this is your movie. A small-time Russian policeman runs smack up against...Kremlin-style corruption, at a time when there are no murders in Russia because, as the leader (Stalin) says, there are no murders in paradise. Some paradise. Be glad you weren't a citizen behind that old "iron curtain." Filmed in the Czech Republic, and Romania convincingly enough that I'm not sure I'd want to be a citizen there, either--even today--judging by the look of the locations. Shudder.

I liked it--and I'll remember it.

I think this is one of Tom Hardy's best performances and the film does an excellent job of conveying a sense of bleak paranoia. The serial killer investigation drives the plot but it is really secondary to background political machinations; the question is not whether they'll catch the killer but whether Leo and Raisa will survive. The only scene I recall with any real colour comes at the end.

Surprisingly underrated movie. Gripping story, realistic locations, great performance by the cast, low light screen ambiance to go with the dark plot. The 'whodunit' part seemed rather weak but there was plenty of other elements to compensate for the gap.

Book is a lot of fiction. Child 44 is based on a serial killer of children and women between 1978 and when apprehended in 1990. In the so called paradise people were starving, oppressed; living in fear. Stalin had over 780,000 executed. He was a cruel and sadistic dictator. Movie was more about a couple having difficulty getting anyone's attention regarding the murders. It was a very good movie regardless.

The problem with this movie is it is apparent it was taken from a longer complex story and edited multiple times so they could get a 2 hour movie. As a result, the movie feels disjointed. The acting, however, was good.

This was a thrilling movie with great sets/location shots. I don't think I would want to read this book.

Very dark and violent movie. Russia in the1950's is a very sinister place. Intriguing story, but at times I lost track of who the characters were. I felt the story was a bit disjointed at times.

Critic reviews were mixed, but I decided to watch because the film starred Tom Hardy (The Legend) and Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo Trilogy)who I believe are going to be the stars of the next 20 years or so. Surely, the film is not a masterpiece and contains a fairytale ending, but I enjoyed the plot, the mystery, and the attempt to deliver a glimpse of life under Stalin.

The love story (Leo and Raisa among friends:)
Leo: Do you remember when we first met? Raisa, remember when we first met?
You thought that I was rude.
Raisa: You were rude.
Leo: I was not rude.
Raisa: You were staring at me.
Leo: I was... I was mesmerized. I was mesmerized by your beauty. Even had to get off at the wrong Metro station just to ask you your name. ... She told me her name was Lena.
... Days later ...
Leo: But then I found you somehow. 8:15 A.M. same train platform that I met you before. Then I asked you...Well, I convinced you to walk with me that day. And when we got to the school gate, I held your hands, and I looked into your eyes, and I said to you, "Lena, ... , Lena, "I am so ready to kiss you right now." And do you know what Lena told me? "Comrade Demidov, my name is Raisa." Who's Raisa? So now I have to go back to work, and tell all my friends that I'm in love with Raisa. This beautiful Raisa. My friends, they all laugh at me. ...

-You're going to Volsk, which, from what I've heard, is pretty much the asshole of the earth, and join the Militsia.

-There is no murder in paradise. ... In 1933, at the height of Joseph Stalin's state-imposed famine against the Ukrainian people, an estimated 25,000 died each day from starvation. The systematic extermination by hunger known as the Holodomor, left millions of children orphaned.

- At the end of the day, hero, monster... we are both killers, you and I. Tell me, are there no children on your conscience, Leo? You knew what you were doing and you chose to do it. But me, ... I can't help it. I can't.

-Remember, you are not in Moscow anymore. Here, we have an arrangement. If you do anything to endanger my team. If you report anything which undermines my authority. If you portray my officers as incompetent. If you do any of these things, I will kill you myself.
