The 1959 version is still the bench mark.
To give a fair review, try to ignore comparisons. That said, Jack Huston is no Charleton Heston and this film has not nearly the same level of drama. Also, Heston's chariot race, without doubt, remains unsurpassed, even with today's special effects. How's that for ignoring comparisons?
It should be noted that this is the 4th or 5th film version of Ben Hur.

For a first time look at Ben Hur I think it was worthwhile. I had to use the captions because some of the actors were hard for me to understand due to background music This was a shortened version of the Charleton Heston version.
The storm and the chariot race were filmed very well, I thought, and the words of Jesus were worth waiting for. I was disappointed with the lack of emotion shown on the faces of the actors...It seemed a little too rushed so that some of the deeper feeling were lost.
I am pleased when actors are used for their talents in movies showing good ethics. I am eager to see the 1959 version.

I remember the original being better then this new adaptation. I liked a few of the scenes in this one and the environment/music/setting was pretty well done throughout the movie. Sadly the characters aren't that great with Judah Ben-Hur having a batman garbling marble voice most of the movie and "cameo" Morgan Freeman who didn't feel like he really fit in the movie since the story itself was altered.

Not bad but don't watch it and even try to compare it to the original on any scope.

I thought this movie was pretty good. The movie was very fast paced and the chariot scene was done well, the acting also was good

Not quite a dud, but borderline. The chariot scenes in the circus are good, as is the battle scene on the slave-powered ship. The screenplay attempts to tap into larger themes of forgiveness and redemption, but the pacing of the film is so uneven the viewer, at least this viewer, never gets pulled in.

Why compare it to the 1958 version? Enjoy it for the entertainment value. Not a great movie but I gave it 3 stars.

What a piece of garbage. The main character generates no sympathy whatsoever. He gets what he deserves. The "bad" guy is actually far more likable. Special effects are pathetic. Don't even try to compare to the far superior 1958 version. You'll cry yourself to sleep because you made such a ridiculous choice. Can't believe I actually put a hold on this disk. And I thought Battlefield Earth was bad. Compared to this travesty Battlefield should have won Best Picture and Travolta Best Actor.

I suggest you watch the original film starring Charlton Heston. This new film version barely resembles the original book.

I liked it. The story was a little different from the Charlton Heston version but the good parts were there (except, "we keep you alive to serve this ship!" - I missed that part :( ).

Faith brought you back to me. The same faith that kept you alive.
-That wasn't faith. Faith wasn't strong enough. That was hate. I became hate. That's what kept me alive.

"Oh, have mercy on me, world! Not one of my 359 gods will smile upon me."
-Don't mock. What's wrong with you? It's supposed to be a celebration.
It's a celebration of your faith, not mine.
-Well, that's the virtue of wine. It doesn't discriminate.
===
As time passed, forgiveness and understanding had reunited the family. To give hope and promise
for a better way. To fight the good fight, to finish the race, to keep the faith.
===
Remember when we were young? ... I can't fight anymore. I can't hate anymore. All I can do is carry you.

I saved them. I saved them!
-You didn't save them! You condemned them to a life worse than death. A life worse than death!
