"LaToya Williams lives in Montgomery, Alabama, and attends a mostly white high school. It seems as if her only friend is her older brother, Alex. Toya doesn't know where she fits in, but after a run-in with another student, she wonders if life would be different if she were . . . different. And then a higher power answers her prayer: to be 'anything but black.' Toya is suddenly white, blond, and popular. Now what?" --

Into white by Randi Pink is an exploration of racism and classism in modern time. This book not only explores sensitive topics, it is also very daring and unique as Jesus was actually appearing in the main character’s bedroom and having casual conversations! Toya is a young lady who experiences an internal conflict with herself as she experiences shocking and pervasive racism that she and her brother must endure every day; consequently, Toya prays for a change, “to be anything be black” (Pink, 20) and her wish is granted. From there, Toya experiences high school the way a popular white girl would; being invited to parties, catching the attention of cute boys and being envied by every other girl. As Toya become more involved with friends, she distances herself away from her brother, causing their relationship to crash. Later on, as rumors spread about Toya (as a white girl), Toya learns that being a girl is hard in any race and learns that she is fortunate to have a loving a family, especially a brother that supports and protect her no matter what. Overall, this book is a very heart warming read and I’ll give this book a four out of five.
