A lottery win leads not to financial and emotional freedom but to social captivity in this wildly cynical classic about love and exploitation. A suggestible working-class innocent lets himself be taken advantage of by his bourgeois new boyfriend and his circle of materialistic friends, leading to the kind of resonant misery. It is unsparing social commentary, an amusingly pitiless and groundbreaking if controversial depiction of a gay community in 1970s West Germany.

Almost Brechtian in its polemics....there are no shades of gray in this sly indictment of capitalism. Sly, because of the "victim within victims" nature of this particular fable. It is no mistake that Fassbinder locates his story in the gay subculture of the time (although actually "the time" seems earlier than the mid-70's). The "bell jar" nature of this society underscores this clever indictment of the class system: money and sex are the common currencies that cross these borders, all the way from aristocrats to petits bourgeoises to carny workers. At the beginning of the film, Fox is billed in a carnival as a head without a body....but by the end of it, along with everything else, he has also"lost his head".
