I'm a stay-at-home mom myself, so I'm happy to welcome another full-time mom to the ranks. You know, sometimes I think it's like us against them, the career mommies. Them and all their various board meetings that are so important. Google this, Yahoo that. Please, I think they spend more time on those board meetings than they do actually parenting, if you know what I mean.
Nobody knows nothing about anybody. You can write that down, Detective, and underline it.
None of us really see things as they are; we see things as we are
There's something wounded about her, if you ask me.
-I didn't ask, and I'm not drawn to damaged people. Do I like to help people in need? Yes. Last time I checked, that's not a character flaw.
I'm a mom. This is my universe. And currently, that universe is in meltdown because my oldest daughter prefers to hang out with her fucking step-thing.
-Hey, you will never lose them. And you know that.
I just thought one day Nathan would get his due. For some reason, Abigail would love me more. He hasn't paid in the slightest for any of it. And now he's got Bonnie, and she's younger and sexier and prettier. She probably gives mint-flavored, organic blowjzbs. And Abigail likes to hang out with them and be buddies. And he got it all. He won.
This is about you, Abigail, and your future.
-And what I'm saying is the metric of success is not always monetary or career-related.It can be a much more holistic equation.
Okay, I'm not gonna pretend to be the person in your life who knows the most about the holistic wonder of the world. What I do know, and I know this for sure, Abigail, is that when it all comes down to it, you have to be independent and you have to be self-sufficient. I was a very young mother when I had you. All that "it takes a village" crap is only good to a certain extent, because even the best-laid plans of your life go poof in your face. And in that case, you need to be strong, and independent, and educated, and a strong woman.
- You said strong twice.
You kind of remind me of a space alien right now, you know that?
Things never blow over Once Madeline gets involved. They blow up.
You really shouldn't encourage her to play with dolls.
-And why is that, exactly?
It's a little 1960s, not to mention sexist.
First of all, I'm happy that Abigail has bonded with your mother. Thrilled about the communal potato peeling thing. But when it comes to my daughter's social recreational life, particularly as it concerns medications that will permanently affect her reproductive organs, will you just kick that little can of worms over to me? Do you understand?
- I do.
And should Skye come to me 10 years down the road and ask for a little lift to Planned Parenthood, I would give you that courtesy call first.
“Renata, Jane is not a nanny. She’s just young … like you used to be.”
“I love my grudges. I tend to them like little pets.”
“I might have kissed him back. It was like a reflex you know somebody kisses you you kiss them back. I might have grabbed his ass. I don’t know, it all just happened so fast.”
“I would have told him to go fzck himself. But I don’t talk like that.”
“Sometimes I’m just holding onto this idea of perfection so tight, something has to give.”
Celeste, get up. You just got the wind knocked out of you. You're fine.
My life isn't perfect, Madeline, bad things have happened to me. I do understand the concept
Madeline, I'm the lucky one. I get to wake up every day next to the girl of my dreams. I just feel like the loser sometimes.
Start documenting the abuse. Write everything down. Photograph your injuries. Keep doctor reports. That could be important in a custody battle, and men like your husband usually do go for custody. He has the resources, the money, the contacts. Most importantly, he has the ego to see this through.
- I don't understand why you're being such an alarmist right now.
Because I'm alarmed.
It's not like you're some sort of a raging bull, Ed. The only time you touch me is when you're reaching across me to get the visine for your eyes.
I know you have feelings for me.
-Well if you know that, then just cling to that.
Hi. I just love sweat on women. Sorry. That was just a general statement.
You haven't noticed she's been a little agitated lately?
-Honey, agitation is her preferred state.
She wouldn't leave if she knew I had cancer.
- But, you don't have cancer.
I'd be willing to get it.
I have a lot of girlfriends, as you know, and never has one of them said to me, 'gee, I wish I'd had a sex a LOT sooner.'
Look, I may not be the good looking adventure ride, but there is something to be said for being there, for being truthful, for being somebody you can steadfastly count on. I will not be anybody's runner up. You need to hear that.
Turns out it's actually harder having a part-time job versus a full-time job, because in addition to all that work, you're actually out there looking for another job.
- Are you looking for another job?
I only do 20 hours a week max. Between you and me, I try to maintain my full-time mommy status so I can lord it over Renata and other career mommies.
Our very first project will be for each of you to do a family tree, where you get to talk about your wonderful family. Isn't that great?
You guys are right. You are so right. And for some reason that makes me feel wrong.
You're like, so nice.
- This is Monterey. We pound people with nice.
-- To death.
And bring me something chocolate that won't make my ass look fat.
Come meet my knight in shining armor. She rescued me like a wounded dog in the street. And you know what else? She's funny.
Jane just didn't fit here. Sort of like a dirty old Prius parked outside of Barney's.
What people don't tell you is that you lose your children. As beautiful and wonderful as you are now, the little girl whose hair I used to detangle and had bad dreams and used to crawl into my bed? She's gone. I guess that's what I'm feeling a little bit. Compounded a little bit by the fact your sister's going into the first grade. I'm losing my babies. Which has been clinically compared to a massive period, I think.
It's one thing to be demonized for having the temerity of a career, but look at us. Look at our life. What kind of woman chooses to work? Certainly not a mother, not by any acceptable standards. You should have seen the way they looked at me today. Oh, my God. And on the one day that I chose not to go to the office and join my daughter for her orientation and then defend her when she's physically assaulted. And then yes, I reacted, humanly like any mother would. And was met with utter contempt.
Guys, mom had a day.
- And don't your start.
I'm on your side, woman.
You know how I feel about riding with texters. It is worse than drinking and driving.
What other 16-year-old even has a social conscience, you know? So, I'm proud of you. I'm very proud. But I think that there are other ways to accomplish your goals.
-Dad, come on. A 16-year-old white girl from Monterey selling her virginity online? Wolf Blitzer would saddle that up for weeks.
She said if a seven-year-old can be sold to sex slavery, then no one would bat an eye if a white, rich American girl would sell hers online.
