A stunning memoir from the astronaut who spent a record-breaking year aboard the International Space Station, a candid account of his remarkable voyage, of the journeys off the planet that preceded it, and of his colorful formative years. The veteran of four space flights and the American record holder for consecutive days spent in space, Scott Kelly has experienced things very few have. He describes navigating the extreme challenge of long-term spaceflight, both existential and banal: the devastating effects on the body; the isolation from everyone he loves and the comforts of Earth; the pressures of constant close cohabitation; the catastrophic risks of depressurization or colliding with space junk, and the still more haunting threat of being unable to help should tragedy strike at home; an agonizing situation Kelly faced when, on another mission, his twin brother's wife, Gabrielle Giffords, was shot while he still had two months in space.

The best part of Scott Kelly's book is, naturally enough, the narrative of his nearly yearlong stay at the space station - from the arrival in Russia for the journey to the space station through to living and working on the station, and finally the journey back to earth and the effects on his body. There are other interesting parts describing his other NASA missions. Unfortunately, the author infuses the writing with all of the excitement of a NASA public affairs announcer - rather bland. In spite of numerous claims of the important science experiments on board the station, the author seems to shy away from any real descriptive information. Even the harvesting of station grown lettuce is without description of observations. Finally, there are long interludes of biographical material flashbacks that are distracting.
