Swallowing Mercury consists of loosely connected vignettes, each with the most particular, vivid elaborations and details. Reading it feels like actual memory, in many ways-- certain things become exaggerated in retrospect, some points maybe wistfully misremembered or confabulated. Greg's young life brims with humor, curiosity, and the intermittent starkness of hard times. In an odd way, it scratches that Little House on the Prairie itch while offering something totally different and new.
