An excruciating period of human history, distorted and exploited as a vehicle for romantic drivel.

A very disappointingly poor movie with bad writing, dialogue, acting and directing. So pedestrian that it is hard to stay awake while viewing. The story itself is very dubious history to say the least and a much better take of this period of history is the movie The Promise with Oscar Isaac.

I was disappointed in The Ottoman Lieutenant. Although the imagery is breathtaking, the characters are very one dimensional.

A story that we've a seen a hundred times before and mostly done better than in this movie. Also, I must disagree with other reviewers about the scenery. Usually the pristine beauty of the setting and landscapes provides a third member to the love story (the deserts in The English Patient or Queen Of The Desert, for example.) I don't remember many beautiful nature shots in this but I do remember a lot of crappy, war torn villages.

A very corny movie that relies totally on good-looking actors (NOT "good" actors) and beautiful scenery. Forget it...

Predictable tragic love story that was good. Enjoyed it.

Worth watching. This is pretty much a standard doomed lovers tale. It is set in Armenia just at the time of the outbreak of WWI. The period settings and costumes are very well done.
There are two things that make it worth watching. (1) The cinematography... incredibly beautiful grasslands and rolling hills of Anatolia are wonderfully photographed. (2) You get a bit of insight into the tensions between the Christian Armenians and the Muslim Turks, and the political situation at the beginning of the war that triggered the genocide. The violence depicted is not especially gross... comparable, I'd say, to an American western from the 1940s.
