Meanwhile, far below the sea, a submarine crew unleashes reptilian terror when they melt a block of ice and release the ferocious Godzilla from his icy lair. When both destructive monsters descend on Tokyo, it's a fight that holds the future of mankind in the balance.

An iconic American monster vs. an iconic Japanese monster. What more could you ask for? This is a good example of one of the earliest cinematic crossovers, and coming soon in 2020 Godzilla vs Kong. That's right, a remake of the 1960's film.

"A giant squid! Hurry!"
I suppose it was inevitable that Japan's most famous monster would fight America's most famous giant ape. If you're a fan of either series, this movie is fun, if pretty silly. Kong is clearly a guy in an ape suit and not a very convincing one at that. Willis O'Brien's stop-motion Kong was much better. As with the first "Godzilla," there was a Japanese version and an English version and it would have been nice if the DVD included both. This was a lighter, more comic entry than the original "Godzilla" and "Kong" and it trivializes both monsters somewhat. There's a bit with a squid that's pretty good and a train scene that is similar to one one in the new, disappointing "Godzilla." There are no special features.

It was O.K for a home TV movie. I was entertained and interesting. But it was NOT worth the long library wait or the price to rent from a Red Box. "I fast forwarded a lot but not all the way.”
