Opinion

From Library Staff

I am very excited to read this book. It is a thriller with more than a touch of Hitchcock noir. Alice and Lucy, old friends, haven't spoken since the awful accident at the Bennington, but when Lucy shows up in Tangier Alice knows something is not right.

This novel brings to mind Hitchcock. This is the story of two women, friends in college, until an accident drives a wedge between them. Years later, Alice is living in Tangier with her husband when Lucy shows up. A twisted tale told in alternating points of view.

An intriguing story about two school friends. Alice is trusting and less worldly mature and Lucy is rougher and manipulative. It's Lucy's unscrupulous behavior that keeps the reader wondering what is around the next bend and expecially how it's going to turn out. Loved it!

When Alice last saw Lucy, her college roommate, she told her that she never wanted to see her again, and yet here she is on her doorstep in Tangier acting like that never happened. And how did she even find her?

This is a case where my expectations were not very high, so I was pleasantly surprised by how delightfully atmospheric this was and it had a nice edge of uncertainty to it always, even when it's unpredictability was predictable.

This book was awful. I could not get into it so I started skipping after the first 75-80 pages. It did not get better. The circumstances were not at all believable and I could not relate to the characters. This book is supposed to be a thriller but it is not, in my opinion. It feels like some aspects are a ripoff of The Talented Mr. Ripley but with more vapid characters. I wish I could reclaim the time I wasted on this over-hyped book of boredom. You've been warned.
