I am very excited to read this book. It is a thriller with more than a touch of Hitchcock noir. Alice and Lucy, old friends, haven't spoken since the awful accident at the Bennington, but when Lucy shows up in Tangier Alice knows something is not right.

This novel brings to mind Hitchcock. This is the story of two women, friends in college, until an accident drives a wedge between them. Years later, Alice is living in Tangier with her husband when Lucy shows up. A twisted tale told in alternating points of view.

I picked this one up on a whim, and was delighted to find that it ticked all my boxes: rich sense of place, unreliable narrators, codependent female friendship, and the combined current of danger and thrill that shot through everything. This was one of those books I was disappointed to finish, because I just wanted to keep reading more of it, or something just like it.

Tangerine is about two friends who become entangled in a web of lies and deceit, with one always trying to out due the other.

I thought this book was pretty good at first. But by the time I got about halfway through, I could tell what was going to happen and didn't feel like watching it unfold. (I skimmed through the second half to see if it played out the way I expected or not.)

This book is a combination of Talented Mr Ripley meets Casablanca meets Single White Female. I enjoyed the descriptive setting but felt there wasn't much distinction between the two points of view.

Alas this would have made a quirky, interesting short story. Not enough guts to it to hold a 308 page novel. In her defense it does feel like the author has a better next book in her.

Meh. I was hoping for more but I found it pretty boring and anti-climactic. Great setting though.

If you are looking for a gripping beach read, this book is it. If you have ever known a con artist and/or a pathological liar, you'll recognize that character and be appalled all over again. The tangerine of the title is a chameleon-like young woman who tracks down her former college roommate in Tangier. The plot, a cross between The Talented Mr. Ripley and the movie Body Heat, comes to its all-but-inevitable ending, leaving the reader hoping for a sequel to even the score. Or to place a call to Interpol. Don't want to give away too much....

Not "great literature" but a wonderful book to disappear into for a weekend jaunt.

There’s nothing like an unreliable narrator and when there are two in the same book you still won’t perceive reality at the end. For me it was frustrating. I love nice clean clear endings. But when I think about a book long after I’ve read it puzzling over what I might have missed, this book proves to be a success with me.

This book started off well but fell apart before the middle. Written in two voices, from two perspectives, it was hard to keep straight which character we were following. I finally just skipped to the end to put an end to my misery. Definitely echos of Highsmith here. The dialogue was well-written but in her next novel this new author needs to find a simpler way to tell her story.

4 stars for originality, 4 stars for quality of writing... alas, 2 stars for the main character...I just never cared what might befall her... look forward to more by this author.
