Sam Dawson has the mental capacity of a 7-year-old. He works at a Starbucks, is obsessed with the Beatles and has a daughter with a homeless woman who abandons them. As the daughter reaches age 7, Sam's limitations start to become a problem. When the authorities take his daughter away, Sam shames a high-priced lawyer into taking his case pro bono. In the process, he teaches her a great deal about love, and whether it's really all you need.

Very good movie. It's hard even for a "mentally fit" parent to raise a kid, and almost all parents have "lost it" moments while raising kids. Good placing of characters who are ready to help Sam (good acting by Sean Penn), where there are others who try to force their challenges to highlight disability of other person, rather than see the good and help someone in need.

Excellent movie! Don't know how I missed this one when it came out. Sean Penn's performance was Oscar-worthy, but he didn't win.

Who knew 30 years ago that the stoner Jeff Spicoli in 1982's "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" would become such a talented dramatic actor? Sean Penn's taken on a number of challenging major roles masterfully. Unfortunately, it's almost painful to watch him acting as someone with Down's Syndrome in this film, because I'm constantly aware of the "acting"... And it's not just him. Anyone pretending to be mentally disabled is - well, just that. Very obviously pretending. It just doesn't work. Perhaps if they had gone the route of, for example, that innovative family TV drama years ago: "Life Goes On", with someone like that young man who played Corky Thacher, who really had Down's Syndrome, and was terrific. All or nothing. Genuine or fake. Anyways, it was a sweetly conceptualized story, I enjoyed the influence the Beatles had on it (All You Need Is Love!). Michelle Pfeiffer was well cast, and seven year old Dakota Fanning was as smart as a whip.

Sam proves,,, No State authority & court system LOVES a daughter/son more than her/his own father & mother.
Therefore, LOVE & FAMILY BLOOD IS THICKER THAN THE COURT SYSTEM, (kidnapping a daughter from her DISABLED father, in the name of "child protection"), making the Child & father DETERMINED TO STICK TOGETHER & fight against the self-serving state institutions.

I found this movie cringe-worthily manipulative and grasping. The ridicule dished out about Mr Penn's unfortunate turn as a mentally handicapped individual years later in "Tropic Thunder", I would say, was entirely deserved. The more challenging a role for an actor the greater the consequences of failure, I'm afraid, and this one failed notably. Oh yeah, Michelle Pfeiffer was dismal, also, as a stressed-out, "Ally McBeal-esque" attorney played just about as hollow as a mannequin. Poor stuff, all around.

Sean Penn gives a great performance as the mentally retarded father of a young daughter who is taken from him on her sixth birthday. Michelle Pfieffer is the lawyer hired to represent him in court. Being mentally retarded means you are slow, not stupid as many characters in the movie find out. A good story; relevant for the times. Bring a box of kleenex.
