I love this movie now! The graphics aren't the best, but the movie and storyline is amazing.

Japanese animators were called upon by Rankin/Bass (Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and other stop-motion animation) to depict this classic children's story for North American audiences. The result was by our standards excellent, but at the time most were still used to the Disney animation style (Fox and the Hound was released almost at the same time) and this movie did not do all that well at the box office. The appeal of the story and overall look of the movie has grown over time, but it still has the usual Japanese anime quirks that are well known now, but at the time a bit unusual and jarring for North Americans.

A really great but sadly underrated flik. I love the art style and the soundtrack, and it's got a surprisingly high-caliber voice cast. Better yet is the ending, bittersweet instead of happily ever after.

I *desperately* wish I would have watched this when I was younger. I almost did, so many times, but every time I put the movie back for something else. It's not awful...but it's not fantastic, either. The character design is beautiful, and the opening credits song is spine-chillingly good. Schmendrick's bone-dry line reads are hysterical, and Molly Gru is as delightful as the book would let you think, but the pacing hits a brick wall when we get to Haggard's castle, and most of the pop-culture songs are simply painful (maaaaaan's roooaaaaad). It doesn't age well if you didn't grow up with it, tragically.

Awful. Depressing. The endless pop songs on the soundtrack are DREADFUL. I can't imagine any normal, healthy child liking this gloomy, so-called children's movie.

Do you ever watch children's movies and think that secretly they were designed for stoners? I can just see a bunch of college dudes getting baked and loving this somewhat trippy animated fantasy movie based on Peter Beagle's book. It's pretty cheesy, especially the songs by America ("Horse with No Name"), but the animation is cool and Mia Farrow, Jeff Bridges, Angela Lansbury, Christopher Lee and Alan Arkin do the voices. Similar in style to the animated "Hobbit," which these filmmakers also did, but less successful.

This classic holds up really well. Especially the voice acting (amazing) and the music by the band "America". Everyone remembers watching this back in elementary school 25 years ago and it is fun to see it again. My 4 year old daughter enjoyed it but there are some scary scenes with the Harpy and the red bull. Very moving story.

Our almost-six-year-old LOVED this (but then, she adores all things to do with unicorns). The animation is stylish and lovely, the story weird and compelling, and yet....we adults, watching with the little one, found it to be the looooongest movie EVER. Perhaps it was the pacing.... It was enjoyable enough but we adults were glad we hadn't paid to see it.
