Twenty-six-year-old Maggie Barnes is someone you would never look at twice. Living alone in a month-to-month sublet in the huge city of London, with no family but an estranged sister, no boyfriend or partner, and not much in the way of friends, Maggie is just the kind of person who could vanish from the face of the earth without anyone taking notice. Or just the kind of person MI5 needs to infiltrate the establishment and thwart an international plot that puts all of Britain at risk.

For those of us who have previously read Mick Herron's Slough House series this gem is fully in character; absolutely hilarious. While Herron can spin a yarn his strength as a writer lies in his humour, How the dopes who have commented missed his tongue in cheek style is beyond me. Enjoy!

The book jacket is misleading! This is not a thriller. It is sad and depressing. It involves a sick man preying on vulnerable women. No "good guys" here. Wish I had saved myself by reading the reviews before I read it. Horrible Book!

most of the tedious middle of this book can be scanned very rapidly. The beginning and end were okay, especially the last part. What a disappointment compared to his other books.

Thrillers with simpering, insecure female characters infuriate me. The book jacket says, "Maggie is the sort of character you would never look at twice." My recommendation is not to look at her at all. The only reason (spoiler alert) the protagonist survives is dumb luck. She is neither competent or interesting. I want a thriller with intelligent, capable protagonists who can handle themselves in difficult situations. Maggie is the antithesis of such a character.
