"After Venya's mother receives a call from school reporting her son's refusal to participate in mixed swimming lessons, she first suspects her teenager of being shy and derides his claim that it is "against his religion." As Venya is finally exempted by the school's devout principal, he grows confident that his strict and rigorous study of the Bible gives him the ability to manipulate all forms of authority. Challenged by a teacher who refuses to consent to his dogma, he sets out to eliminate her and subdue an entire community. At a time when arguments over the teaching of religion in public schools are prominent in the media, this wildly escalating classroom drama - based on a play by German playwright Marius von Mayenburg - serves as a frightening cautionary tale."--Container.

A high school student develops full-blown Christian fundamentalist acts in his school completely disrupting the entire school including his teacher, classroom, and the school board. Is this film some kind of criticism of Putin and his cronies? One thing I do know is that a Belarusian immigrant to the USA right after the downfall of the Soviet system claims that this film has a legitimate feel for Russian society today.

Prepared to get into this, but couldn't, screaming put me off, Bible thumping - Scripture out of context, girls in bikinis with model like figures what's that about? Didn't hold my interest long enough to watch the entire film - so I didn't, nuff said?

It could have been good- it just wasn't. Adapted from a stage play, it felt awkward and seemed to want to do more than it should have attempted. Portions dragged on ad too much time spent as in an early scene where the mother is trying to figure out the reason her son is not attending swim class. A story of a high school student in Russia who becomes increasingly psychotic with demented religious obsessions and this film is about how those around him react including friends, teachers, school admin and his mother.

Fanatical Christianity brings new purpose to the life of a deeply disturbed highschool student who immediately sets about proselytizing hellfire and damnation at home and at school—a situation which proves deleterious to both his divorced mother and his spineless principal. But he saves his most ardent vitriol for a certain atheist biology teacher. And all the while Putin's image smiles beatifically from the wall, and the TV screen is filled with images of war and rutting animals. Whether you take it as a political metaphor or a direct attack on religious inanity, this vicious take-no-prisoners satire rips Yahweh and Mother Russia each a new hole one sanctimonious bible quote at a time.
