It's a guilty pleasure for sure, but given the numerous times I have seen House Party, I can't in good conscience rate it any lower than 4 stars. Some aspects of the movie are great, including the music, the dance and rap battles, Robin Harris as Pop, Sharane's family and Walter, Play's next-door neighbor. I recommend House Party for fans of teen movies and/or Kid 'N Play's style of lite hip hop. The movie is rated R.

The 90s was something of a golden age for black cinema. While Spike Lee might have been the public (and controversial) face of the movement, many young directors made their debut during the decade, including John Singleton ("Boyz 'N the Hood"), the Hughes Brothers ("Menace II Society"), Kasi Lemmons ("Eve's Bayou"), and Reginald and Warrington Hudlin ("House Party"). While the early 90s were dominated by gritty hood films, "House Party" was a breezy, good-natured teen comedy starring the rap duo Kid 'N Play, who had a bit of a Fresh Prince and Jazzy Jeff vibe. In fact, the film was written with them in mind. It might you nostalgic for the 90s and for a (slightly) more innocent kind of comedy, but there are a few scenes with racist white cops, which is unfortunately even more relevant now. It co-stars another group, Full Force, a young Martin Lawrence, and Robin Harris, who died shortly after completing the film. Somebody involved in "Superbad" has seen this film. Followed by 2 sequels.
"What the hell's a Public Enema anyway?
