Winter 1997. Amarillo, Texas. Brian Deneke is known for his green mohawk and undying passion for punk music. Brian, along with many of his fellow 'punks', refuses to conform to the conservative culture that surrounds them. Their radical appearances stir social intolerance within the community, particularly with Cody Cates, a high school jock who assimilates to a pack known as 'white-hatters'.

A really stunning piece of cinema (and criminally overlooked). In the soul of Easy Rider, but painfully relevant to the modern cultural context of white America. It looks at the 'why are white boys angry?' question and doesn't flinch in weaving together an answer that frames violence, privilege, and entitlement within community, masculinity, homophobia, and art. If the script sometimes pushes against an edge of chaotic drama, those moments are carried along by strong, riveting performances by every actor here (Davis is incredible, but I can't get the image of Lorelei Linklater on the stand out of my head, her work in this brings the tears). And what comes out of this film is the poignant cultural idea of America, a movie about teenage life in this country chronicling a true event, very aware of the part a 'teen movie' made in today's cultural context must play. I benefited from not being familiar with the subject matter ahead of time, the case this movie is about, so the way Chick and Brooks frame the story was especially impactful. I hope this enters the cultural conscience of American movie classics - it very much deserves the spot.
