When Hazel Johnson and Mari McCray met at church bingo in 1963, it was love at first sight. Forced apart by their families and society, Hazel and Mari both married young men and had families. Decades later, now in their mid-'60s, Hazel and Mari reunite again at a church bingo hall. Realizing their love for each other is still alive, what these grandmothers do next takes absolute strength and courage.

Bingo Love tells a sweet love story the likes of which are rare in romance novels, much less graphic novels--that of two black women who meet as teens, realize their friendship could be so much more, are separated for fifty years, and have the good fortune to be reunited with each other when "the world is finally ready for our kind of love." The spark is still there, and it makes just a lovely, swoony little read.

Lovely little GN! The illustrations are like a visual 'hug and a squeeze' for folks who rarely see their body types rendered with such loving care. The storyline embraces both the constancy of love and its reshaping as we we grow and change, touching on prejudice, marriage, duty, family, divorce, aging and losing loved ones. My only regret about the book is that its brevity robs the reader of the opportunity to really know each character more fully, which weakens the impact of the important story shared here. Still, a great addition to the growing body of GNs exploring the LGBTQ experience.

In this beautiful graphic novel, teens Hazel and Mari meet and become fast friends in the 1960s. However, the pair are torn apart when their feelings for each other are revealed to family with the power to separate them. Fastforward nearly fifty years, when both have children and grandchildren. The two meet randomly at bingo, and can't help but revisit their lost love. What happens in this kind of situation, where both women have families and friends who might not understand? How has their love lasted such a separation? A quick, engrossing read, this story is heartbreaking in some places, but touches your soul in others.
