This movie was okay. This movie is based on the true story of the Winchester family and the crazy famous sprawling Winchester mansion. I watched the movie mainly because of the fascinating and unique house. The story was moderately entertaining and moderately spooky. I found the child actor tedious and annoying and was secretly rooting for the ghosts to succeed in taking him away. I enjoyed the beautiful set and the costumes and also Helen Mirren's performance, but the rest was just average.

Cute kid with red hair. Great old house. Stupid movie. Why did Helen Mirren do this movie? Did she need money? Dull, plodding, odd, stupid.

I like this movie. There were some good made you jump moments. You have to turn the volume on your Tv up so that you can get that effect. Well acted to. I think I will watch it again?

Over the years, had oft wondered about the backstory to this strange house, as to the why of it (that is also why I like to watch 'bonus features' after movies, as they cover so much more ground beyond the storyline in the film itself; as this one also did).
Helen Mirren was stirring as the somber, mysterious, conversley sensitive, yet strong main character.
Great to see this bit of history portrayed in a film, and an eerie, spooky one at that. That there is still such a house and the film is based in facts, makes it all the more haunting and compelling a story. See it if you dare!

The actual premiss of the the movie was quite interesting. However, I doubt this was very accurate historically and I felt that they took what could have been a really great psychological thriller and turned it into a run-of-the-mill ghost story. PRetty much a waste of Helen Mirren’s time and talent.

The haunted house genre is a familiar one for movies, and this one takes on the bizarre Winchester House in the early twentieth century. There are a few spooks along the way, though it is treading familiar territory. It's the performances of Helen Mirren and Jason Clarke that elevate the material.

okay, I saw it and it did have a few cheap scares in it. It was well made as production values go and for the genre it is okay. Helen Mirren does, as always, a capable job as the lead. Nice period piece to a certain extent although when it comes to "Second Amendment Rights" it takes a pass although one would think the whole premise of the movie would be taking a stand either way. Instead, the movie walks the line by saying yes guns are bad, but hell we need them to kill the bad ghosts.

Not as "spooky" as I would have liked but still an OK movie. Interesting in the fact that it was based on true events.

*Spoiler Alert*, read quotes to refresh key points after watched the film:

Sometimes we all need a little help to see the difference between reality and illusion. And that's about taking control, about not letting fear control you. Because fear in the end only exists in your mind.

She spent the last 20 years expanding it (an eight room house originally.) What stands now is a gargantuan seven storied structure, with no apparent rhyme or reason, no master plan, each maze of halls more confusing than the next. A house under never-ending construction, built on the orders of a grieving widow whose mind is as chaotic as the house itself.

I understand the Winchester is still considered the superior rifle on the market, ma'am.
-Superior? Superior at what?
Accuracy, range, stopping power.
-Killing. Indiscriminate killing. Very superior.
You feel responsible for the misuse of your product? If a weapon works as intended, one can hardly call it a misuse.
-Well, it can be used for good or bad, depending on the person wielding it.

See, profiting from such a thing as violence and death, that is a wickedness that follows you like a shadow. Yes, we might also call those shadows "guilt."

You know, I keep records of all the lives a Winchester has taken. Hundreds have been reported. Probably thousands haven't. The guilty, the innocent... The rifle doesn't discriminate. And many of the souls make their way to this house.

So 13 is a devilish number to protect you from devils?
-No, no, no. That is a divine number, to protect the cycle of life and death.

They want me to reconstruct the rooms that they died in, then they can enter our world. And the trouble is, I don't always know who it is I'm speaking with. It could be some innocent bystander or a victim of a crime, or someone else.

I show them my deep remorse. I want to help them let go of their grief and their anger.
-And how do they react?
Favorably. Yes, mostly. Once they are at peace, then they can move on. We can tear down their room, and then we start again.
-And are there those that don't react so favorably?
Yes. Yes, we lock them away.
-How does one lock a spirit away?
Thirteen nails seals them in. Once they find peace, we can release them, and they can leave this house.

-No.
The one you invite into your own home.

The farmer's old mule fell into his well. …The farmer heard... He heard the mule crying. And it broke his heart. He chose to bury the animal in the well and put it out of its... Its hardship. He started shoveling. The mule realized that every time dirt fell on his back, he could shake it off and step up. Shovel after shovel. He could shake it off and he could step up... Shake it off.
