Since this is the first review, I will add my opinion.

I do watch the occasional foreign film, as I do find some very interesting and well done films from other countries. The major draw backs is having to read the subtitles, especially when they go by too quickly, too small of a font, or not the right colour sometimes blending in with the background.

I gave this a chance, I think due to Donnie Yen (Ip Man: 2008, 2011, 2016; Rogue One: A Star Wars Story: 2016) and that is was based upon a real life story beginning in 1963, with an illegal immigrant coming into Hong Kong, looking for a new start. The other main real life character in the film was a corrupt police detective Lee Rock, played by Andy Lau. Andy Lau is reprising his role, playing Lee Rock after 26 years since the 1991 film, To Be Number One.

After the first 45 minutes or so, I found myself skipping ahead and stopping and skipping ahead every so often, as it was easy to follow and found some parts dragging on. The script was somewhat too fast at times and just did not find it very captivating, which is why this does not get a very high rating. There is no special features on this DVD.

Although this is a Chinese dialogue movie with English subtitles, I really enjoyed it. Great movie. Action scenes were very good.

This is a true story about the famous drug king Cripple Ho and an ambitious cop Rock Lee in Hong Kong in 1960. The movie is full of violent scenes with fighting and gun shooting. It is acted by two big stars Andy Lau and Donnie Yen.

Story began in 1960 when “Crippled Ho” (跛豪) from Chaozhou (潮州) arrived in Hong Kong and settled inside the Kowloon Walled City as an enforcer for a local gang. Soon he was hooked up with a well-connected Sergeant Major Lee Rock (雷洛) whose law enforcement motto was “I'd say, if I get to call the shots, there'd be rules for everyone to follow.”

Soon he was hooked up with a well-connected Sergeant Major Lee Rock (雷洛) whose law enforcement motto was “I'd say, if I get to call the shots, there'd be rules for everyone to follow.” The two created a prosperous and powerful criminal enterprise until HK established the ICAC (廉政公署= Indepentent Commission Against Corruption) in 1974. Interesting but highly localized crime police corruption drama with the bygones of 九龍城寨, Kai-Tak airport (now a cruise ship terminal) and British colonial rule as backdrops.

The years before 1974 marked the darkest period in Hong Kong's history.
香港在1974年以前可以說是歷史上最黑暗的時候. 在殖民管制下,警黑勾結,集體貪污

… my livelihood has been centered around Kowloon Walled City. Kowloon Walled City is a no man's land. It's a grey area in the Treaty of Nanking. The British have given up on this place. Drugs, gambling, prostitution, and the dog meat business have flourished. Not even the police dare set foot in this area, lest they not make it out.
