"When their plane to New York is grounded on the morning of September 11, 2001, strangers Elliott and Joni are unexpectedly thrust together amidst the chaos of that historic day. With little in common but both needing to get to NYC urgently, they accept help from Joni's family friend Scottie, who lends the duo a rusty old 1972 Chevy Van. The shock and stress of 9/11 quickly threaten to derail their cross-country journey until the pair discover what they do have in common: a love for old folk songs. Armed with a pile of guitars left in the van from Scottie's old touring days, Elliott and Joni raise their voices together (and with those they meet on the road), rediscovering the healing nature of music and bearing witness to a nation of people who, even while mourning, manage to lift each other up in the wake of tragedy."--Container.

Enjoyed this one. Just wish there had been more complete songs rather than the 1-verse snippets. Both leads were likable for sure and I enjoyed hearing both sing. At times, it ventured in to travel-log territory I think but at least that resulted in a bit of nice scenery. There is some profanity but not very much.

"American Folk" is a rare gem of a movie! While you watch the movie the gifts of folk music will enter your soul. There is a uplifting feeling. A simplicity and beauty to the tunes and the lyrics. The performers are not worried about being famous. Folk music speaks about the human experiences of all of us. It speaks to both young and old. It will always be a part of our history and culture. "American Folk" is simply a work of art and a very beautiful one at that!
P.S. American Folk Soundtrack is available on cd from KCLS!

This is a musical, but it focuses on the story and the music is just part of the action. Like a good musical, there story and character development are the key and the music is worked in. I wish more had been worked in! Joe Purdy's voice is mediocre, but Amber Rubarth's is lovely and they work together. For those of us familiar with folk music, it is a fun sing-along movie.
It drove me crazy that the wardrobe budget for this movie was about $10. One thrift store outfit per character for a seven day journey across the US even while driving through the Arizona/New Mexico desert in September with the heater on full blast to keep the engine from overheating.
