Becky Chambers' science fiction novels are driven less by epic plots and more by incredibly detailed world-building and character development. For a series with only three relatively short books (so far), and despite the fact that each book focuses on different characters, this universe and its inhabitants feel intimately familiar. Chambers' novels are quiet and contained in the best possible way: they follow fully-realized characters struggling with issues recognizable to all of us - they just happen to be in space.

I was really looking forward to this book, but I have to say it was a little disappointing, especially compared to her first two books (and I LOVE LOVE LOVED the first two Wayfarers books). There isn't much of anything you could call a plot--while her other books are character driven as well, they have more of a driving force that gives an arc to the story. I also just didn't care about the characters much here, possibly because it felt like there were too many to get to know any of them very well. It's more a collection of 6 separate, tangentially related short stories than a single novel with the rich, well written characters I've come to expect from Chambers. I get the themes she is trying to explore here, but sadly it felt like a miss. Some good parts, some boring, mostly just okay. A good enough read but not as mind blowingly amazing as her previous work.

Character driven sci-fi is my favorite sci-fi and Becky Chambers is really, really good at it.

I am really excited to see a new book by Becky Chambers. Her previous two--The Long Way to a Small and Angry Planet and A Close and Common Orbit--were two of my favorite reads from 2017.
