My 13-month old got this for her first birth and it was a hit from day one. Both her dad and I are big into nature and gardening, so this book has appeal to the two of us who have to read it many times a day! At this age, I favor books that are reality-based (rather than being imaginative) and use real words rather than cutesy, kid words. This book delivers on both those. I also like that the illustrations aren't overly cartoon-character-like, but they are still artistic. As a creative person, I can't think of another book on her bookshelf that has illustrations quite as engaging as these. There really isn't any anthropomorphism in the book, which is also great. The text flow and rhyming make for an easy, pleasant read. I sometimes sing the book to her. Definitely recommend!

This is an excellent kids book with fun, full-page illustrations and a great rhythm. I love the field guide at the back of the book and so will any bug-obsessed child. I wish we could have it on a poster!

I think this is the best of Diterlizzi's books. If you enjoy this one, "Some Pets" is also very similar.

With chirpy rhyme and vivid colors, this book will inspire you to explore the outdoors together. Packed with action verbs, the rhythmic verse invites readers and listeners alike to chant along: “some bugs HOP / some bugs GLIDE / some bugs SWIM / and some bugs HIDE!” For the aspiring entomologist, a final two-page spread identifies these bugs by name – use it as a springboard for delving into some informational books about insects, or for making a checklist for an outdoor summer scavenger hunt. While outside, nurture early literacy and early science skills by asking questions, making predictions, and recording observations.

Bug-obsessed kids are encouraged to explore their own backyards in this "marvelous encyclopedic look" (Publishers Weekly) at critters that creep, crawl, and fly. Each insect and arachnid is shown up close and described by its distinctive action: "Some bugs STING. Some bugs BITE. Some bugs STINK. And some bugs FIGHT!" Jaunty rhyming text keeps the pages turning at a steady clip right up to the surprise ending, which challenges readers to reconsider their perspective. Combining fascinating facts with eye-catching collage art, Some Bugs is sure to be a hit with fans of Steve Jenkins' many animal books.
