Meet the Patels is the romantic-comedy documentary I didn't know I needed. Ravi and Geeta Patel use amateur style photography and black and white animation to show Ravi's journey for love and reconciling his Indian roots with an American mindset. I learned a lot about Indian culture and their traditional matchmaking process. If you love movies like "My Big Fat Greek Wedding," give this relaxing and funny gem a try.
I really enjoyed this. The last in-car conversation with his parents was moving. It wasn't only his parents he hurt by keeping his girlfriend a secret: it was extremely disrespectful to his girlfriend. Nice that his sister's love life wasn't neatly resolved and tied with a bow. Hard to understand the parents' single-minded, near obsession with their children getting married. I wonder how much of that is saving face in their community.
The main character seemed self-absorbed and was not too likeable in my opinion, but I thought the father was hilarious. Couldn't get enough of him! I think they did a good job of portraying very real issues within Indian culture, and the quest for marrying off the kids! I definitely enjoyed the film because it was light- hearted and funny, and hope that in the end, the situation truly worked out, as I think it was a documentary about an actual person and his journey into commitment and a marriage.
The only thing that I mildly enjoyed was the intermittent animated scenes. Other than that, I found the movie boring and dry.
The father was hilarious.
A sweet and lighthearted look at modern romance!
Was more like a home movie.
Wedding costumes were interesting. Closed captions made it hard to follow.
Sorry to be the kill joy on this one, but three of us watched this, and three of us felt like we had wasted too much time on it. The main guy is too self-absorbed and immature! And not humorous. The interviews with people outside his family were more interesting and funny.
Lame.
