Add a QuoteMark Watney: They say once you grow crops somewhere, you have officially colonized it. So, technically, I colonized Mars. In your face, Neil Armstrong!
Mark Watney - "...But, consider this; I get to fly around like Iron Man. Let's go Iron Man."
Most of the best quotes are near identical to those from the book ( https://sccl.bibliocommons.com/item/show/1439133103_the_martian#quotation ) except the film added more earthly material at the end such as Watney addressed the students part 1 of 2:
Welcome to the Astronaut Candidate Program. Now pay attention, because this could save your life.
Trust me, I know what I'm talking about. Let me get a few things out of the way, right off the bat. Yes, I did in fact survive on a deserted planet by farming in my own shit. Yes, it's actually worse than it sounds. So let's not talk about that ever again.
Watney addressed the students part 2 of 2.
The other question I get most frequently is... "When I was up there, stranded by myself... "did I think I was going to die?" Yes, absolutely. And that's what you need to know going in because it's going to happen to you. This is space. It does not cooperate. At some point, everything is going to go south on you. Everything is going to go south and you're going to say, "This is it. "This is how I end." Now, you can either accept that...or you can get to work. That's all it is. You just begin. You do the math. You solve one problem... then you solve the next one. And then the next. And if you solve enough problems, you get to come home.

Add a CommentCompletely unbelievable, and unrealistic, to such degree, that destroys premise of the story. Damon is as annoying as ever (to me), but otherwise acting is average.
an astronaut gets left alone on Mars with nothing but comic book science to save him, if you can believe it
In my opinion, I thought the movie was done very well. It has been a long time since I watched something that kept my interest throughout the whole movie. The meaning at the end of the movie was also powerful as it describes basic life. A well worth movie to watch.
What is the big deal about Matt Damon, anyhow? He's a real lousy actor. No charisma at all.
Based on the novel by Andy Weir
A little boring but I watched it to see how it would end.
There's enough character development here to bring the audience to the point that you want the protagonist to survive. The compressed timeline naturally leads to several dramatic events occurring frequently. This is literally man against nature & there's not much nature on Mars, so what little nature there is must be revered & maintained.
Great movie! I saw it in theaters back when it came out and just finally got around to reading the book...which made me want to watch the movie again! Very well done, great special effects, and they did they best they could with adapting it. A few oddball changes from the original that I didn't quite get, but whatev, still a good story.
As is often the case, though, the book is better. And it's such a fast read! Go check it out!
Rated 7/10. This was better than I thought it would be.
It was a so-so movie. I liked the concept and that made the film worth it to watch. And it helps that its a Ridley Scott film which never is boring. But definitely not the best work for either one of them
