In this gripping documentary, filmmaker Nicholas de Pencier examines the complex global impact that the Internet has had on matters of free speech, privacy, and activism. Based on the book by Ron Deiber, it is the story of how the Internet is being controlled and manipulated by governments across the world in order to censor and monitor their citizens. As they battle for control of cyberspace, ideas of citizenship, privacy, and democracy are challenged to the core.

Excellent documentary with many moving stories of activists Ethiopia, Tibet, Syria, Brazil, and the UK being betrayed by social networks that they are using to organize dissent and disseminate images of oppression and abuse. The film shows the work of Citizen Lab, at the Munk School of Global Affairs, University of Toronto, that discovered the Chinese GhostNet spy system that had reached into over a thousand servers worldwide, but got a negative reception for their discovery from the US and Canadian governments. Why? Because the US and Canada were piggybacking on the Chinese spy net. Takes us inside the bunker in Sweden where Wikileaks was first hosted. Gives us conversations with a Syrian activist who was tortured for a month because of he liked an activist group on Facebook. Tells us the story of a Pakistani woman murdered after her work was popularized on social media, and hatred for her was crowdsourced, leading to her death. A wake up call for a world drowning in surveillance. Takeaway idea: Democracy cannot exist without privacy, and privacy is almost gone.

Everyone should see it! It will really open your eyes to the human- rights abuses in the countries you have not even considered or knew about, incl your own! Snowden brought our attention to the mass surveilance of own citizens even in the Western Countries! This video will show what actually happens in action where the civil and the human rights are abused by the police and its govts! The opposition govt members, the journalists, the peaceful activists, monks, many of which are not spared from beatings, torture, imprisonment, even death, depending on which country! China, Tibet, Brazil, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Syria, etc etc! The citizens are spied on all the internet sites, cell phones, laptops, etc with devastating consequences to the users! Canada, Sweden, US, etc etc all spy on its citizens.. We in the West are only lucky that our own govts have not bombed our own journalists, human -rights advocates, etc! What will happen if we ever get the authoritarian govt? Internet is a blessing and a curse, it seems!
