When I started this book I expected some quick tips and tricks for helping siblings get along. This book has those tips and tricks, but it starts out by focusing on a difficult and lifelong task; a peaceful home doesn’t mean enforcing peace between siblings, it means finding it in ourselves. As the author states, “regulating our own emotions is the toughest part of parenting.” I found the opening of the book a good reminder to focus on finding a calm center so I can deal with my children with compassion.
There was a lot to impact my parenting in this book. The in-depth discussion of time out and punishments was really helpful. This book continually emphasized that compassion with boundaries was the best answer, and the examples of how to do that were so concrete that I think I can practice that approach with some rereading.
Some of the other ideas I loved and want to implement are the family pillow fight/daily roughhousing, ten minutes a day of adult attention to what a child is doing (this is not adult structured time, just interested observation), and ten minutes a day of laughter.
