Great Northern Railway arrived in Bellingham in 1898. Connections were made with the Fairhaven & Southern's railway which laid track across the Bellingham Bay. Connections with the Seattle & Montana railway allowed trains to travel from Vancouver B.C. to Seattle. The boom ended when Great Northern Railway chose Seattle as its west coast terminal.
